Summary

King County Parks is recruiting to fill a Supervisor I for our Backcountry trail crew program. This position is responsible for planning and overseeing various backcountry trail construction projects system-wide and overseeing volunteer organization and community partnership contracts. This position will supervise and monitor work of the trail crew, plan trail projects, allocate resources, and set priorities for successful results. This position requires strong supervisory and communication skills, the ability to lead and motivate multiple work crews, and extensive knowledge in backcountry trails and structures.

Who is Eligible: This position is open to all qualified applicants.  
 
Work Location: This position reports to the Squak Mountain Maintenance Facility, located at 10610 Renton-Issaquah Rd SE Issaquah, WA 98027  and supports districts throughout King County. 

Work Schedule:  This full-time position works a 40-hour work week, which may be a  5/8 or 4/10 schedule, and can include weekend days as regularly scheduled workdays. Typical start time is 6:00AM. This position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. 

Job Duties

  • Provide input and recommendations for design, development, construction, and maintenance, of county-wide trails system.
  • Plan, organize, schedule and coordinate daily work activities of assigned work unit; prepare work schedules and staffing plans.
  • Monitor work quality and quantity; provide input and/or prepare performance appraisals to evaluate subordinates; issue written reprimands and letters of counseling and/or recommend further disciplinary actions to higher level Supervisor when necessary.
  • Identify and recommend training needs of assigned work unit; provide training to subordinates.
  • Prepare job estimates.
  • Assist in budget preparation; monitor monthly and annual budget expenditures; authorize purchases and code invoices.
  • Develop and recommend policies and procedures for the work unit.
  • Oversee program safety for assigned work unit; conduct monthly safety meetings; monitor for safety hazards and unsafe personnel practices; and recommend corrective actions for the whole work unit as appropriate.
  • Provide input on new equipment specifications and recommend modifications to existing equipment.
  • Organize, prepare and maintain records and reports to ensure that the work is accomplished in accordance with established goals and objectives; attend meetings with Supervisor and management staff to discuss work projects, schedules and timelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience leading or supervising work crews, including work planning and performance management. Experience can be as a supervisor, crew chief, lead, foreman, or other equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience planning and overseeing trail construction projects.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience identifying and monitoring occupational hazards and applying safety precautions.
  • Experience in staffing and scheduling work groups.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and respectful manner  (oral and written).
  • A strong and motivated leader with a team oriented and positive attitude.
  • The willingness to change and the drive to make a difference.
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Outlook and Word).
  • Exceptional customer relations skills.
  • Proven ability to positively interact with a variety of people in a diverse environment.

 The Most Competitive Candidates Will Have:

  • Extensive knowledge in United States Forest Service trail standards and trail construction best management practices including permitting requirements.
  • Experience working with and enforcing contract terms with multiple organizations.

Physical Requirements: This position requires hiking long distances while carrying heavy equipment and packing personal food and water, working on uneven grades, slopes, surfaces, and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions with limited restroom facilities.
 
Work Environment: The candidate must be able to work in an office environment in addition to working in a back-country setting and possess the ability to conduct field site visits and inspections of remote assets to ensure that operational, maintenance, safety, security, and regulatory conditions are met.
