ABOUT Citizens’ Climate: Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL)/Citizens’ Climate Education (CCE) is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots organization focused on national policies to address climate change. CCE works to build nationwide support for a revenue-neutral carbon dividend approach to address climate change and coordinates with a 501(c)(4) sister organization, Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), when volunteers engage in advocacy for specific legislation. With over 190,000 supporters organized into more than 500 chapters, CCL/CCE train and support volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, publish media about climate solutions, educate their communities about climate change, and build political will for national climate legislation. SUMMARY:  Young people today are at the heart of the climate movement. A study shows that 45% of millennials or younger identify as climate activists as opposed to 36% for Gen X and 32% for Boomers. At CCL, engaging youth on climate advocacy is central to our mission to advance climate policies and grassroots engagement on climate action. The Student Engagement Manager has the important role of promoting participation from young people (ages 18-30) in CCL. This role will be responsible for supervising support staff, fellows, and interns. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Student engagement

  • Provide overall direction for student campaigns and grassroots climate advocacy. 
  • Supervise 5-10 fellows each working 10 hours per week. 
  • Support students to start CCL campus chapters and climate campaigns.
  • Oversee CCL’s internship program and promote the equity of the recruitment process. 
  • Manage CCL’s Climate Advocacy Certificate Program.  
  • Recruit diverse students to CCL’s student programs, conferences, and events. 
  • Maintain communication platforms, including a monthly newsletter, Zoom meeting, and social media. 
  • Develop and collect resources for student engagement. 
  • Track outcomes and keep records of higher ed engagement. 

Work with CCL staff and non-student volunteers on student engagement 

  • Coordinate higher ed outreach and programming for CCL’s conferences. 
  • Support volunteers that work with youth. 
  • Assist CCL’s targeted outreach priorities for conservatives and people of color.

Liaison with organizations that work on youth climate advocacy

  • Maintain relationships with organizations that work with young adults on climate.
  • Develop relationships with faculty and staff at colleges and universities.
  • Collaborate with organizations on youth climate initiatives and events. 

Note: Evening and weekend hours are often necessary when working with volunteers across multiple time zones. 

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate would have the following experience and personal attributes, though we will consider all qualified candidates: 

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Experience in environmental organizing and advocacy, especially on campuses
  • Background working with youth and college students
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people on both the right and left politically 
  • Proven ability to supervise students in internship and leadership positions
  • Able to use social media and mass communication or willing to learn

COMPENSATION: $65,000 annual salary.  Benefits for a full-time position include health insurance (eligibility after a 30-day wait period), dental and vision insurance, and a 401K retirement plan.  Two weeks vacation will be accrued during the first year of employment.  An additional week of vacation is accrued after one year of  employment with CCL.
