We are currently accepting applications for a Surface Water Maintenance Worker. Individuals assigned to this job classification perform a wide variety of maintenance-related tasks. Under direct supervision, employees will inspect, repair, construct, and clean storm drains, and catch basins; be involved in vegetation removal and brushing; reconstruct stream corridors; dig around utility sites, drive light duty vehicles and keep them clean; as well as flag and direct traffic. This job classification typically inspects and maintains a variety of tools and safety equipment used in their job. The work is often strenuous and repetitive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Maintenance Worker job classification is an entry level position. Upon successful completion of a training matrix, employees in the Maintenance Worker classification will advance to the Skilled Worker classification with a new salary range of: $4,943.38 – $6,212.74.

  • Perform routine repair, construction, and drainage maintenance.
  • Perform basic masonry and pavement and utility repair.
  • Use backhoes, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, forklifts, etc.
  • Clean catch basins and pipelines.
  • Clear brush and weeds in detention ponds.
  • Remove debris from streams.
  • Performs inspections of the storm drainage system.
  • Assist in laying pipe.
  • Assist in storm events and pollution event response emergencies.
Qualifications
  • Basic mechanic skills/knowledge.
  • Six months work knowledge/experience in construction.
  • Customer service experience with the general public.
  • Basic computer and keyboard skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on teams.
  • General knowledge and ability to interpret maps, drawings, and records.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safety procedures, work rules, and guidelines.
  • Possess excellent verbal, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime (including nights and weekends).
  • Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record by City standards.
  • Must be able to obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment flexibility test and physical capacity test.
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Prior to obtaining CDL, selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test (consistent with Federal Laws requiring drug and alcohol testing for all job classifications requiring CDL).
  • In-house applicants who do not currently possess a CDL will be subject to the pre-employment drug and alcohol test in accordance with DOT rules and regulations.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 90 lbs. and engage in considerable bending at the waist, pulling, pushing, and climbing.
  • Work is done mostly outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Common hazards include traffic, underground lines, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Work is often strenuous and lasts for long durations with short breaks.
  • Individuals must have adequate hearing and visual acuity to successfully perform the essential job functions and requirements of the position.
  • Individuals must be able to hear, speak, and understand verbal communication and other outside sound sources. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • This is a union position.
  • Required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record by City Standards.
