The Stewardship Program Coordinator will work in cooperation with the Great Basin Institute and the US Forest Service (USFS), Lassen National Forest to support forest health initiatives to increase pace and scale across the unit.  This position will facilitate fuels reduction and habitat improvement/protection through varied ecological restoration projects with stewardship partners and contractors. This position provides project management of collaborative stewardship to support strategic initiatives and long-term goals primarily in California.  Project work seeks to minimize the loss of forest carbon from large, intense wildfires while promoting carbon sequestration efforts through biomass utilization and post-fire recovery.

Job duties are, but not limited to, the following:

  • Review, compile and analyze field data for project planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Monitor and oversee cruising and marking of timber, prepare general logging plans, and verify logging system settings for project implementation.
  • Utilize appropriate documents, determine sale boundaries, proper location of logging roads, acceptable marking and cutting methods, stumpage prices, and the requirements for brush disposal, erosion control, and stand improvement.
  • Prepare and ensure quality of documentation such as detailed maps, timber sale appraisals, and timber sales write up.
  • Coordinate contracts with mastication and biomass removal contractors, monitor contractor compliance, and conduct quality control of implementation projects.
  • Assist with monitoring, tracking, and reporting on project efforts and progress.
  • This position is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a collaborative, landscape-scale forest management project. GBI continues to develop our forestry program and there will likely be long-term opportunities for a qualified and dependable forester after the completion of this project (pending performance).
