FULL-TIME/NON-PERMANENT 
SPAWNER SURVEY TECHINCIAN 
SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2) 

 

Fish Program – Region 6 Fish Management 
Montesano, Washington – Grays Harbor County 

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: Three (3) Months 
March 25, 2024 – June 25, 2024

 

Assist Fish Biologists with data collection that is essential for the management of the fish resources within the Grays Harbor basin.   

Gather data that is needed to assess stock status, build fishery models, and to forecast salmon and steelhead returns.

With that in mind, 

This is an opportunity to calculate the natural spawning escapement of each salmonid stock by origin.

With your experience you will provide biologists with data necessary to work with tribal, federal, public, and private organizations to facilitate cooperative and effective collection and exchange of fishery and escapement data.

Duties

Our Spawner Survey Technician,

Conducts Salmonid spawner surveys according to Region 6 – District 17 Procedures and Protocols: 

  • Identify, record, flag, and monitor salmonid redds and conduct live/dead fish counts within selected reaches.
  • Collect and record data on field forms which may include GPS locations and mapping. 
  • Biological collection of dead fish includes sampling for adipose and dorsal fin mark status (hatchery or wild origin), scale sampling (for age and origin), coded wire tags (stock composition and origin), opercle punch –T tags –jaw tags, DNA samples, or other biological samples. 
  • Surveying includes enumerating (counting) Pacific and Brook lamprey visible redds and live/dead counts.
  • Spawner surveys are conducted on foot and/or by utilizing rafts or pontoon style boats, drift boats, or Jet-pumped outboard equipped river sled boats. 

Driving to and from stream locations via Federal, State, and County roads, as well as local travel along streams on private (logging) roads throughout the District:

  • Complete mileage forms, secure down all objects attached to a vehicle, and properly maintain the vehicle inside and out for both maintenance and repairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. The primary work environment is outdoors and physically demanding, it includes considerable amounts of driving and hiking into remote areas on private and public lands.  Limited office duties.  
    2. Field surveys are usually conducted alone on foot or in boats, for larger streams, crews are teamed up to work together. Surveyed reaches may include hiking more than 10 miles per day.
    3. Fieldwork is often done in inclement weather within varying stream flow and visibility conditions in a wide variety of terrain and stream substrate conditions. 
    4. Field work can be strenuous while walking in or along streams with slick boulders, crawling over logjams, wading across riffles with moderate – fast current or maneuvering watercrafts.
    5. Occasionally lifting and maneuvering field equipment upwards to or greater than 40 pounds.
    6. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule: 
    1. The work hours are 24/7 (non-scheduled) generally 40 hours per week. 
    2. Workdays and hours are determined by weather, stream flows and visibility, access, fishing schedules, and fish densities. 
    3. A flexible hourly and daily work schedule is therefore needed to perform the assigned tasks. 
    4. Weekends, holidays, and evening work may be required.   
    5. Hours over 40 hours per week accrue as “Comp. time”.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Except for on-board observer sampling programs, there is no over-night work.
    2. Depending upon specific project locations, the percent of travel time will fluctuate daily as field sites may be conducted within all the District’s six counties in South Western Washington.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Boat type: Raft, pontoon, drift, or jet-pump outboard equipped sled.
    2. General raingear, waders, wading shoes raincoat, Personal Floatation Device (PFD), Polaroid glasses, GPS unit, WDFW hat, and other survey gear is provided.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Positive communication skills and public relation skills.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

 

OR

 

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of school science AND Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

 

License/Certifications:

  • Valid Unrestricted Driver’s License. 

 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and?training availability.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Elementary biology, in-the-field identification of live and dead salmonids, identifies, interpret, and monitor salmonid/lamprey spawning activity by species.
  • Experience operating watercraft in river type waters.
  • Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or State Boater’s Card required for Motorboat operations.  (May be obtained after hire).
  • Basic computer data entry skills.
