The position is located on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Shasta Lake Ranger District in Mountain Gate, CA.

The Social Scientist/Natural Resource Specialist administers complex recreation and non-recreation special use activities and programs.

Responsibilities

  • The responsibilities listed below are at the full performance level.
  • Prepare all types of recreation/non-recreation special use permits including inspection of permittee operations to determine compliance with terms of the permit based on regulations and law.
  • Evaluate requests for both recreation/non-recreation special use permits to determine planning, organizing, advising on, and administering activities and programs.
  • Gather and compile data needed to determine proposed resource management activities using conventional methods and techniques.
  • Maintain information database to monitor resource program activities.
  • Prepare correspondence to permittees such as inquiries concerning special uses, delinquency, and termination notices and to disseminate rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain files relating to special use activities including recreation residences, organization camps, resorts, concessions, rights-of-ways, power lines, pipelines and/or communication sites.
  • Confer with permittees or operators in an attempt to gain compliance with permit terms and/or regulations and laws.
  • Communicate program information to the public regarding management practices, rules and regulations relating to special use permits.
  • Review operating plans for special use permits to determine if action should be initiated to renew or reissue a permit.
  • Oversee construction of approved improvements to permitted recreation developments including resorts, organization camps, and recreation residences in consultation with engineering and heritage personnel.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

Social Scientist GS-0101:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included a major field of study in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position
OR
Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field
OR
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Natural Resources Specialist GS-401:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position
OR
Combination of education and experience that includes courses equivalent to a major as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
