SINLAHEKIN WILDLIFE AREA ASSISTANT MANAGER 
WILDLIFE PROGRAM
Okanogan County, Washington
           This recruitment is contract funded by a combination of federal and local (i.e. capital) funds.

We are seeking a candidate with a passion and dedication to promote the WDFW conservation mission on the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area in Okanogan County.

 

Picture yourself assisting with the development and implementation of the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area Management Plan to achieve healthy, diverse and sustainable fish and wildlife populations and their supporting habitats.

This is an opportunity to, perform fish and wildlife habitat enhancement projects, monitor grazing permits and agricultural leases, assist with facility maintenance and construction projects.

 

The optimal candidate has applied experience in habitat management, forestry, farming, weed control, and equipment maintenance work.

Our Sinlahekin Wildlife Area Assistant Manager  

  • Leads, manages, and provides technical input for Wildlife Area projects.
  • Enhances and restores wildlife habitats, and performs habitat maintenance activities using a variety of equipment.
  • Implements Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) on Wildlife Areas.
  • Assists with the development of and monitoring of grazing plans, agricultural permits/leases and other land-use permits while keeping appropriate records.
  • Cultivates native vegetation and food plots using predefined methodologies.
  • Conducts studies, field reviews, and surveys on habitat, wildlife, and recreation on wildlife areas.
  • Implements wildlife area plan activities, including habitat and recreation management.
  • Plans, coordinates and monitors ecosystem/habitat enhancement projects on wildlife area to benefit fish and wildlife.
  • Participates in interagency projects that contribute to the restoration and conservation of fish and wildlife habitat via wildlife area use plans, regulations and actions.
  • Surveys Wildlife Areas for invasive vegetation, native T&E plants and wildlife, and general habitat conditions; and uses predefined methodologies to implement appropriate management.
  • Conducts outreach and communicates with neighbors, stakeholders, land-use permit holders, and general public regarding wildlife area activities, permits, and plans.
  • Repairs and maintains facilities, infrastructure and small/large equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. At times work is performed in an office setting but mostly in the field.
    2. Teleworking options are available for office work.
    3. Field work entails working alone in remote areas, during inclement weather, over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, water and mud up to 60-70% of the time.
    4. Must be able to walk, bend, stoop and transport equipment and gear weighing over 50 pounds.
    5. Safely operating motor vehicles, trailers, farm machinery, shop equipment, and ATV’s in field situations.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – overtime eligible.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:   
    1. Daily travel to field sites.
    2. Occasional travel required for training or meetings.
  • Tools and Equipment:   
    1. Computer hardware and software (MS/Office/Outlook), GPS software, radio telemetry equipment, digital cameras, binoculars, spotting scopes and radios.
    2. Pickup trucks, flatbed trucks, utility trailers, ATVs, chippers, fire suppression equipment, boats, trailers, tractors, implements mounted on tractors, lawnmowers, augers and drills.
    3. Standard hand tools such as shovels, jacks, bow saws, pruning saws, backpack sprayers, fence post drivers, wire stretchers, and tools used in carpentry.
    4. Power and hand tools used include chain saws, brush cutters, mowers, electric herbicide sprayer, and standard shop tools such as grinders, drills, table-saws, bandsaws, handheld circular saws and saber saws.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Interacts with the public while in the field and responds to routine public inquiries via phone and e-mail.
    2. Reports and interacts with other agencies and Non-Government Organizations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science or a related field.

OR 

  • Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for education requirement.

AND 

  • One year of professional experience in fish management/research, wildlife management/research, or habitat management/research.

OR

  • A Master’s or PhD. in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience.

AND

Job Knowledge, this experience can include voluntary, personal, academic or quantifiable experience: 

  • Methods and practices of land management, technical habitat processes and elements of habitat for wildlife and fish.
  • Wildlife habitat management techniques, environmental regulations, principles and procedures of fish, wildlife or habitat biological research.
  • Weed/noxious plant identification and management using pesticides and integrated pest management.
  • Agricultural equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Accountability in managing budgets.

 

Ability to:

  • Follow all safety guidelines and requirements.
  • Safely apply herbicides and pesticides.
  • Negotiate resolution of disputes between competing parties.
  • Supervise and provide training to temporary and volunteer staff while providing constructive correction, redirection and discipline when needed.
  • Identify wildlife and plants species and conduct field surveys to collect data.
  • Learn applicable state, federal, and local environmental regulations and policies.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Effectively and safely operate motorized and non-motorized equipment and tools, perform basic carpentry and proper care/maintenance of equipment.

Ability to Safely:

  • Drive, operate, haul and maintain work truck, tractor, trailer and backhoe.
  • Operate ATV’s and farm equipment.
  • Operate backpack and ATV mounted sprayer used in herbicide applications.
  • Operate saws and other equipment used in forest habitat management.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Washington State Public Operator Pesticide License. (Must be obtained within 3 months of employment).
  • Red Card Certified – Including the ability to pass the Arduous Pack Test. (Must be obtained within 6 months of employment).
  • First Aid and CPR certified. (Must be obtained within 6 months of employment).
  • CDL may be required in the future.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience with heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • WSDA public operator’s license and experience with the use of herbicides.
  • Efficient use of computer and computer related technology for efficiency of communication.
  • A strong working knowledge and experience working with the management of Dry Forest Habitats and Shrub Steppe Habitats.
  • Experience with livestock behavior and management, including fence repair and construction.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcMap (GIS mapping systems) and GPS to gather information and generate maps.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group PM-310-1 Red Card certified.
  • Supervisory experience.
