This is an opportunity to work in a challenging, fast-paced, executive environment. This full-time position will serve as a senior strategist for the Department of Natural Resources Office by providing key design and support of public education initiatives to the External Affairs and Executive Leadership teams, along with essential public engagement and social media management duties as assigned.

The position functions as a member of the External Affairs team. This position reports to the Director of External Affairs and is located within the Office of the Commissioner of Public Lands. They will also be a part of DNR’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This position leads and supports the External Affairs team’s active public education and engagement on issues critical to the Commissioner and agency’s strategic plan, key initiatives, and key external partner relationship-building.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
Provide strategic planning for partnership, engagement, and communications in support of the mission and work executed by the Commissioner of Public Lands and Executive Management.

Convey information to the public about key Commissioner and Agency priorities.

In collaboration with other key teams, develop and implement a robust public education campaign to support the key initiatives of the Commissioner and the Agency.

Invite new partnerships, strategically plan and execute engagement opportunities, and support the goals of the External Affairs team as defined by the Director. Under the direction of the External Affairs Director, implement strategic calendaring for the Commissioner, ensuring time is well-utilized and external events are high-impact. Other duties as assigned by the Director of External Affairs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced experience as a strategic advisor of external and partner development and community outreach, preferably for a public agency, elected official, or company that generates significant public and media interest.
  • Advanced experience managing, planning, marketing, and coordinating outreach events and public education campaigns.
  • Ability to work in and with culturally and economically diverse populations, demonstrated working knowledge of, and cultural sensitivity to those populations.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to build, track, and maintain relationships with community and external partners.
  • Ability to interface with external partners, analyze/interpret issues and/or concerns, and find solutions.
  • Ability to create and sustain effective relationships with community partners, foster and share leadership among individuals in the community, and build bridges among diverse community members and organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to make complex information understandable to the general public using plain language.
  • Comfortable speaking in public and representing the agency at public events.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships; even in times of high pressure and conflict.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
  • Knowledge of organizations – environmental, beneficiaries, business, etc. – that work with DNR.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • This work setting is at the Natural Resources Building office in Olympia. Approximately 90% of the work performed is indoors in an office environment.
  • Position requires approximately 1-2 days per month away from the duty station that includes overnight travel for meetings, conferences, and trainings within Washington State and nationally.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in marketing, communications, public policy, environmental science or another field relevant to the position’s responsibilities;
    OR four years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
