Senior Environmental Biologist/Permit Specialist

Ecological Land Services, Inc. is looking for the next great addition to our team! ELS is an environmental consulting firm serving the Pacific Northwest and Southeast Alaska. We specialize in land, water, and shoreline projects involving wetlands, streams, wildlife, habitat, and endangered, threatened, and sensitive species.

We are seeking a full-time Senior Environmental Biologist/Permit Specialist. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to be an influential member of our expanding environmental consulting firm. A Senior Environmental Consultant/Permit Specialist may be responsible for preparing and contributing to environmental permitting applications, preparing technical reports, and planning documents, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, engaging with regulatory agencies, conducting field work for various natural resource assessments, managing all aspects of projects including team or individual responsibilities, developing project budgets, and mentoring entry and mid-level Biologists. A Senior Environmental Consultant/Permit Specialist is accountable to their Branch Manager and works closely with technical staff. Experience

A bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, natural resources, ecology, botany, biology, or other related field and five or more years of full-time employment in the environmental consulting field. Primary responsibilities may include:

• Independently prepare or contribute to environmental permitting applications as required by the National Environmental Permit Act (NEPA), the Growth Management Act (GMA), the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), the Shoreline Management Act (SMA) and local Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) regulations, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Sections 404 or 10, the Washington Department of Ecology’s Section 401, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Hydraulic Project Approval, and local critical areas regulations.
• Prepare technical reports and planning documents such as biological evaluations/assessments, critical areas reports, and critical area mitigation/management/restoration plans including analyzing potential impacts on biological resources for a variety of projects. These projects typically require working with both private or public clients in a variety of land use development areas, including residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional development, but can also encompass natural resource mitigation and restoration.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, planners, and other professionals to assemble regulatory compliant environmental plans, reports, and permits and provide strategic advice to avoid/minimize/mitigate impacts.
• Engage with regulatory agencies on behalf of clients to achieve compliance for projects through permitting processes.
• Knowledgeably conduct local and regional assignments for natural resource assessment, including but not limited to, wetland delineations, ordinary high water (OHW) delineations, shoreline, stream, and fish and wildlife habitat assessments in accordance with current protocols (i.e., soil, hydrology, vegetation inventory, habitat, species, and plant identifications).
• Manage team and individual project responsibilities including coordinating field logistics, field work, and document preparation.
