Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is a fisheries research consulting firm that serves the Pacific Northwest and California has an immediate need for a Senior Biologist to join our Issaquah, WA team of scientists. At CFS, our mission is to rigorously apply the scientific method to afford our clients innovative, scientifically robust solutions to address a variety of fisheries and environmental challenges. The CFS team achieves this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications. The Sr. Biologist provides support for the organization by leading efforts in conducting fieldwork and data collections, data analysis, writing and publishing papers, and problem solving for our clients. Additionally, the Sr. Biologist provides project management and leadership to more junior staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead projects or project tasks including supervision of staff and budget
  • Coordinate field data collection and train and oversee field crews for multiple project
  • Provide guidance and oversee hypothesis testing, data collection, analysis, and problem solving for various projects, studies, and other assignments for clients
  • Data management and analysis using GIS, R and other statistical packages
  • Complete research, technical writing, and analysis of data related to project tasks as assigned
  • Support development of project proposals, plans, objectives, tasks, and budgets for small to medium projects
  • Work closely with Principal or Senior Scientists to develop project reports including graphics and data summaries and interpretations
  • Maintain client relationships, attend client meetings, and distribute periodic project updates
  • Attend and present at scientific meetings and provide guidance to Biologists and Technicians for presenting at scientific or stakeholder meetings
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist in or lead writing of scientific manuscripts for publication
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (required):

  • Fisheries Science and/or Restoration Expertise: Knowledge and experience with the scientific method and fisheries and restoration science. Demonstrated ability to identify, develop, and lead complex, dynamic aquatic resource studies with public and private partners. Ability to identify and pursue emerging fisheries and aquatic studies to solve natural resource problems.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Surveying Experience: Experience monitoring habitat restoration projects, leading and hiring field crews, conducting aquatic habitat surveys and stream mapping using common protocols (i.e., CHaMP, TFW, or similar) and survey equipment (Total Station, RTK), and sampling fish using a variety of methods.
  • Project Management Skills: Co-manage with Principal and Senior Scientists on several projects and serve as a Project/Task Lead. Track project budgets and complete all required products/reports for projects. Hire, train, and manage Technicians and field crews and schedules.
  • Data management, analysis, and writing: Experience managing and analyzing spatial data using GIS, including QGIS and ArcGIS , Excel, and R and other statistical packages. Experience writing and leading all aspects of technical reports and demonstrated experience publishing scientific manuscripts.
  • Team Leadership Skills: Within a team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture, sets personal high performance and quality standards and enables the team to be successful.   • Science-Business balance. This individual should demonstrate expertise in and be passionate about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems. The individual should have an understanding of business functions to help manage CFS as a profitable business.

Desired Experience

  • Strong leadership skills, with proven ability to motivate and guide staff towards success
  • Experience in fisheries, restoration and stream ecology and watershed assessment
  • Experience publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Experience surveying and mapping stream channels with Total Station and RTK GPS
  • FAA remote pilot part 107 licensed and experience collecting aerial imagery using drones

Education/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology, or equivalent science related field plus 5 years of successful and sustained performance in Biologist positions
  • MS or PhD in a science related discipline and 3 years of experience
  • Demonstrated writing skills, as evidenced by authorship on reports and scientific publications

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Ability to travel to remote locations to conduct field work for 2 to 10 days at a time
  • Willingness work long hours in the field or office
  • Working irregular hours in various kinds of weather and potentially rugged terrain in order to meet project deadlines
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
