Portland Parks and Recreation are seeking Seasonal Park Rangers!

Ranger program provides a positive public safety presence in parks, community centers and natural areas. Our parks serve over 10,000 park visitors per month and Portland Park Rangers are integral in creating a welcoming environment. Seasonal Park Rangers ensure the enjoyment of park users visiting parks, natural areas and community centers through education and engagement on park rules.
Park Rangers provide park safety services in parks, forested natural areas, urban plazas, docks, multiuse trails and community centers. Seasonal Rangers also provide support at our summer programming events.

Being a Portland Park Ranger requires a combination of effective communication, customer service skills and the ability to serve as a Public Safety ambassador. Rangers may encounter any number of nuisance issues that require tact and skill in resolving amicably and with respect to individual rights. Seasonal Rangers are supported by Full-Time Park Rangers, Ranger Supervisors, and Security Leadership Team to assist in problem solving and decision making.
Rangers work with a diverse public and have a demonstrated ability to problem-solve and reduce park user conflicts. Rangers maintain a welcoming environment in parks by establishing positive connections with park users, providing information regarding parks, natural areas and community centers similarly educating the public on park rules. Park Rangers also coordinate with other bureau divisions and public safety partners to ensure safe, healthy, enjoyable experiences. Seasonal Park Rangers work with full-time Park Rangers in enforcing city code where applicable.
The position works in all weather and terrain conditions, outdoors, alone or with a team, including night and weekend work.
Details for this position:
Type of appointment – Full-Time, Temporary Park Ranger
Reporting Location – Park Ranger Headquarters, Downtown Portland, Portland OR 97204
Schedule – Up to 40 hours per week; may include evening and weekend work
Pay range  – $18.47 -$24.00
Duration – Typically late March through mid-September.

Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.
       To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
1. Ability to provide excellent customer service in sometimes stressful situations, tactfully and with respect for individual rights.
2. Ability to remain calm, professional and positive, when explaining policies, rules and procedures, while also being able to assess possible violations, develop solutions and apply practical judgment.
3. Ability to apply conflict resolution and communication techniques, to communicate effectively with diverse communities and the ability to adjust communication style to audiences, as appropriate.
4.  Ability to read and understand laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, protocols, directives and standard operating procedures related to public safety and/or park use.
5. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and utilize City-specific technology and general office software.

Applicant must also possess:

  • A valid State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-hire physical exam relevant to the position.
  • Ability to successfully complete a post-hire basic training program.
  • Ability to successfully obtain a DPSST certification for unarmed security provider within 6-months of hire.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation, which may include fingerprinting.
