This recruitment announcement will be used to fill multiple vacancies and future vacancies for Jessie M. Honeyman State Park and Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park Management Units.

What you will do:

As a Seasonal Park Ranger Assistant, you will perform basic tasks in multiple areas of park operations such as janitorial work, landscape maintenance, interpretation or visitor services, although some positions will require performing tasks in a variety of areas.

In this role you will:

  • Provide excellent customer service to visitors
  • Complete campground reservations for visitors through the computer system
  • Perform landscaping such as weed eating and mowing
  • Perform custodial duties such as cleaning restrooms and maintaining clean park facilities

Additional duties will include:

Landscape Maintenance:

  • Plant, prune and irrigate vegetation with hand and power tools
  • Mow lawns and fields with riding and power mowers, trim turf edges with hand or power tools
  • Manually apply fertilizers and pesticides under direct supervision

Custodial Maintenance:

  • Clean rest rooms, showers, bathhouses, observation buildings, maintenance shops and interpretive centers by sweeping, washing, disinfecting and mopping floors, walls, ceilings and fixtures
  • Collect, separate and properly dispose of garbage and recyclable materials.
  • Clean fireplaces, tables, footpaths, parking areas, wastewater disposals, signs, drinking fountains and other small fixtures

Facility Maintenance:

  • Assist in the construction, maintenance and restoration of hiking trails, footpaths, footbridges, parking areas and curbs
  • Assist in painting buildings and other structures using brushes, rollers and spray equipment, properly clean tools and dispose of cleaning solutions
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of park utilities, including water, sewer and electric systems
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of building plumbing, including: unclogging toilets and sinks, changing faucet washers, stopping pipe leaks
  • Assist in the maintenance, repair or construction of building structural elements, including walls, floors, ceilings, partitions and roofs using use hand and power carpentry tools as directed

Visitor Services:

  • Accept payment for camping, day-use parking and miscellaneous sales items (firewood, ice, etc.); prepare reports and make bank cash drops
  • Seek voluntary visitor compliance with park area rules and regulations
  • Provide information about local attractions and Oregon Parks
  • Assist during visitor related emergencies and prepare related reports

Resource Interpretation:

  • Assist in assembling materials and resources for the development of interpretive presentations, and present interpretive presentation

Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Six (6) months of experience (paid or unpaid) performing public contact or customer service duties (e.g. Teacher, Customer Service Representative, Salesperson, Receptionist, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping, custodial, etc.).

OR

(b) Six (6) months of college in any discipline (24 quarter hours/16 semester hours).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience communicating well with others.

  • Ability to use a computer to record and verify information.

  • Experience providing customers with information about facility rules and asking for customers to comply with facility rules.

  • Experience handling cash, making change and preparing simple cash reconciliation reports.

  • Skill in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape and building maintenance.

  • Experience performing custodial duties including cleaning public restroom facilities.

  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
