The Olympia Parks Maintenance division is looking for qualified candidates to fill current seasonal employee vacancies, and additionally to create a candidate pool from which to draw from as needed throughout the 2021 season.

About the Position
The Park Maintenance Division is seeking individuals to join our team to perform tasks focusing on maintenance of all landscape, building facilities and athletic fields within the City of Olympia. Employment in these positions usually will not exceed six months. Hiring will be done on an on-going basis as needed throughout the season (March – October). Weekly work schedules will vary in the number of hours or days worked, and may include evenings and weekends.

Note These positions do not offer employee benefits except for what may be required by law, i.e. State retirement plan, sick leave and workers compensation.

Job Description

  • Janitorial services such as cleaning restrooms, litter control, dumping of garbage cans and small repairs.
  • Landscape maintenance such as mowing, weeding, edging, and pruning, and the use of all associated equipment in all types of weather.
  • Trail maintenance such as brushing, re-surfacing, railing and boardwalk repair, and use of associated equipment in all types of weather.
  • Athletic field maintenance such as baseball field prep, soccer field lay out, turf maintenance, building and bleacher repair.
  • General maintenance and upkeep of equipment and light duty vehicles to be used in the field.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work outdoors in heavily trafficked areas, in all types of weather, and on all types of surfaces.
  • Skill in the use of a wide variety of power and hand tools, equipment, and machinery used in parks maintenance.
  • Use good judgment in the operation of potentially dangerous equipment while working at potentially hazardous work sites and maintaining constant awareness of hazards and continuously applying safe work habits and practices.
  • Listen to, remember, and apply work directions, instructions, information, and practices in daily communication with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Safely drive and operate light duty vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks, off road service and transport vehicles, and other related conveyances.

Requirements

  • Must be a minimum of seventeen years of age before starting work.
  • In accordance with the Child and Adult Abuse Act (RCW 43.43), applicants considered for appointment will be required to undergo a criminal inquiry relating to crimes against persons that will be conducted prior to hire. Employment is contingent upon acceptable results of the inquiry.
  • A valid Washington State Driver’s license is required for nearly all positions. If in possession of an out of state license, a Washington State Driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days to remain employed with the City. Some exceptions may apply.

Contacts:

  • Maintenance Workers have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.
  • City maintenance crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.
  • It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.
  • If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.

Supervision:

  • None.

Accountability:

  • The employee is accountable for safely performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.

Working Conditions: (Working conditions will vary by assignment.)

  • Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
  • Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and sufficient mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
