SUMMARY

Chelan County Natural Resource Department seeks one or more seasonal employee(s) to assist with a variety of field work.  Employment will run approximately May 1 through October 31, 2025. The position will work closely with Natural Resource staff to support restoration and monitoring efforts. This position works almost entirely outside in arduous conditions and interacts with the public. Must be willing to drive, and may be required to use a personal vehicle, which would be reimbursed at the Chelan County mileage rate. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implementation of assigned field activities including riparian plantings and maintenance, weed control, stream restoration (e.g., BDAs), mapping, photo points, temperature data collection, water quality sampling, hydrologic monitoring, data entry etc.
  • Operate GIS to perform data collection, management, and analysis
  • Vegetation inventory, field surveys
  • Construction of Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) and similar stream restoration structures including harvesting and hauling of logs and branches, as well as operating a hydraulic post pounder
  • Safely use hand/power tools such as chainsaws, hand saws, loppers etc.
  • Project monitoring
  • Data collection
  • Use of Basic computer applications/ survey equipment
  • Record keeping and reporting
  • Vehicle use
  • Working outside on various project sites in variable conditions

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have field experience collecting scientific data, work independently to follow detailed instructions and be familiar with the use of basic hand tools. Careful attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Current enrollment or recent completion of a botany, natural resources management, soils, ecology or related field degree is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Applicants must be over the age of 18 and possess a valid driver’s license. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Applicants must be willing to perform manual labor and able to sustain physical effort for prolonged periods of time; work extended hours on a case-by-case basis; be able to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy loads (tools, equipment, materials etc. in excess of 45-pounds,); navigate uneven terrain; show flexibility in maneuvering quickly changings conditions (e.g. weather or wildlife encounters); be able to react quickly in case of emergencies such as sudden weather changes or accidents; have experience and tolerance for sun exposure, dust, insects, and unpredictable weather etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Applicants will be working mostly outside in periodically arduous conditions. Applicants may work in a group setting or alone in semi-remote locations. Applicants would need to be familiar with self-sufficient preparedness in working outdoors with limited resources and facilities. Work environment could change frequently and could include: variable weather conditions; uneven terrain and variable ground conditions; remote locations; noise and machinery; wildlife encounters; moving and potentially deep water etc.
