Position Description
Redhorse Corporation has a need for Biological Field Technicians for a seasonal position during the Spring of 2021 (early March to the end of June) on a multi-year monitoring project located on Fort Irwin National Training Center, California.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct vegetation surveys of the federally endangered Lane Mountain milkvetch and species of concern, desert cymopterus populations on Fort Irwin and surrounding areas as directed by full-time permanent staff.
  • Conduct shrub cover surveys in Lane Mountain milkvetch habitat.
  • Conduct and analyze dust deposition rates.
  • Follow established survey protocols.
  • Occasionally assist permanent staff with other springtime Natural Resource projects/surveys as needed, including Mojave fringe-toed lizard surveys, burrowing owl surveys, pre-construction flora/fauna inventories, and springs/seeps monitoring.
  • Must have an aptitude for field data collection, data entry, and the ability to clearly summarize data.
  • Graph trends in plant mortality or survival rates based on multiple years of data collected in the field.
  • Assist with the writing of technical reports on the findings of the natural resources inventories.
  • Assist with events designed to educate the public and military about desert ecology and conservation.
  • Work well in a military environment and adhere to all U.S. Army rules and regulations associated with personal conduct.
  • Work in sometimes inclement weather, travel in rough, rocky, desert terrain, and collect data in extremely windy, hot, cold, or dusty conditions.

Minimum Basic Requirements for Experience, Skills, and Education include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, ecology, or other biological science undergraduate degree.
  • 1 year of experience conducting biological field work.

The work environment for this position requires an individual to be able to:

  • Walk long distances and across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces.
  • Climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Pass a basic background check to gain access to a military installation and have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience working in the Mojave Desert or an arid ecosystem.
  • Plant identification skills for species common to the Mojave Desert or experience in plant identification in other desert ecosystems with an aptitude for learning new plant species quickly.
  • Experience conducting general natural resource inventories, and/or experience surveying Fort Irwin’s other special status species (Lane Mountain Milkvetch, desert cymopterus, Mojave fringe-toed lizard, desert tortoise, burrowing owl, and Mohave ground squirrel).
  • A working knowledge of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Experience navigating and collecting data using GPS technology.
  • Experience operating 4×4 vehicles on unimproved dirt roads.
