Salary– $2,957.00 – $3,821.00 Monthly

Our Spawning Ground Surveyor,

  • Uses established procedures to conduct steelhead redd count surveys by accurately recording observed redds and live and dead fish counts within selected stream reaches of Clallam and West Jefferson counties.
  • Maintains accurate field records.
  • Contacts private landowners, Olympic National Park (ONP), and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for permission to gain access to land and acquires gate keys to gain access to survey sections.
  • Enters raw data in spreadsheets and databases.
  • Prepares daily data summaries.
  • Communicates spawning activity within chain of command in absence of project lead.
  • Works with local hatcheries as needed during spawning periods or construction.
  • Routine maintenance of assigned field gear, vehicles, and equipment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. The primary work environment is outdoors and physically demanding and is often done in inclement weather, within varying stream flows and can be strenuous.
    2. The job involves considerable driving and hiking, usually 3-5 miles, but can be up to 15 miles on occasion, into remote areas on private and public timberlands.
    3. Walking along streams on slick boulders, wading riffles, or maneuvering watercraft (i.e. raft, hard side drift boat, and pontoon boat) requires moderate strength and agility.
    4. Lifting equipment up to and or greater than 40 pounds may be required.
    5. Occasional work in a typical office setting and on a computer will also be required. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    1. The hours of work are 24/7 (non-schedule) 40 hours per week.
    2. Weekend and evening work may be required.
    3. Work hours can and may vary due to inclement weather, length of daylight and river conditions.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Some travel may be required and is typically local or regional to conduct business or attend training.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Waders, wading staff, GPS, radios, CWT wands, knives, forceps, drift boats, and pontoon boats.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Develop and maintain effective relationships with biologists from tribes and other public and private agencies to promote exchange of information.
    2. Frequent contact with constituents (clients) including some who may be angry or frustrated. Provide daily reports of observations and project status to supervisor and/or other WDFW biologists.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
 

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1. 

Or

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
     

Please note: Volunteer work or past experience with state or federal agencies in technical field positions will be evaluated, and credit may be given, on a case-by-case basis.

 

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Ability to:

  • Fill out field data forms clearly and concisely and to follow oral and written instructions are necessary.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with the general public are necessary.
  • Hike long distances (up to 15 miles/day) in riverine environments.

 

Certifications:

  • Obtain basic First Aid/CPR certification, with completion within 6 months of hire. Maintain certification.
  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
