Our Puget Sound Sampling Unit Peninsula Area Supervisor, 

  • Assists in the development of procedures based on current fishery activities to fulfill program needs. 
  • Directs and integrates the various aspects of the assigned fishery sampling projects for the Peninsula, ensuring that work progresses toward achieving goals and objectives. 
  • Supervises and conducts recreational fishery sampling at all boat launch facilities, marinas, piers, and shore-based locations where salmon and marine fish angling occurs and are accessible to sampling staff. 
  • Supervises the intensive monitoring of mark-selective Chinook and coho salmon fisheries on the Peninsula to produce in-season catch and effort estimates including dockside creel sampling, test fishing when and if needed, boat surveys, and Salmon Trip Reports from the public. 
  • Is responsible for baseline sampling of recreational marine fish and intensive monitoring of halibut depending on the time of year, this includes angler interviews, catch composition by species, location of catch and general biological data as well as collecting lingcod spines. 
  • Organizes and participates in boat surveys to determine the ratio of boats originating from sampled versus non-sampled sites. 
  • Plans and coordinates coded-wire tag (CWT) recovery efforts from recreational salmon fisheries.
  • Is responsible for all supervisory duties of the Peninsula region of the Puget Sound Sampling Unit, this includes daily supervision of both permanent and non-permanent staff, depending on the time of year.
  • Plans, prioritizes, and implements the distribution of staff during recreational fisheries and between recreational and commercial fisheries sampling when needed.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the implementation of agreed-to sampling plans for monitoring commercial fisheries. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work is conducted both in the field and in an office environment. 
    2. Field work includes working in inclement weather, walking on slippery docks, driving vehicles, boating on marine/rough waters, launching/retrieving boats, and climbing into/out of boats. 
    3. Exposure to loud noises, confined spaces, knives, fish blood, slime, odor, possible punctures from toxic fish spines or teeth, biting/stinging insects, and pollen – long periods of sitting, squatting, walking, carrying, kneeling, and seldom lifting fish, boxes of fish, and other bio samples (40 lb. max). 
  • Schedule: 
    1. This position is 24/7 (non-scheduled) – weekend, evening, and some holiday work required. 
    2. Typically, 40 hours per week – overtime is required when needed.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Required travel to sampling locations within work area and occasional travel to other Puget Sound locations, seldom overnight. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Agency uniform item(s), outboard motorboat, boat trailer, Global Positioning System (GPS), compass, data logger, fishing tackle and gear including downriggers, computer, agency vehicles, cell phones, coded-wire tag detectors, electronic data collection devices, iPads, weighing scale, Very High Frequency (VHF) radio, Automatic Identification System (AIS), Radar, calculator, knives, Personal Flotation Device (PFD), marine survival suit, rubber boots, and rain gear.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. As a representative of the agency, interact with the public, tribal co-managers, and other agency staff, this may include contact with individuals that are frustrated. 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND Five (5) years of experience as a Scientific Technician, three years of which must be as a Scientific Technician 2 or 3. 

     OR 

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science AND Five (5) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist or chemist, or zoologist. 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or a closely allied field will substitute, year for year experience. 

Experience: 

  • Twelve (12) months of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Boat handling experience in boats 16 foot or larger in marine waters. 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Motor-Boat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) must be obtained within a year of hire and maintained thereafter, or an equivalent certification.  
  • First Aid/CPR Certification obtained within the first year of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Must be able to identify all salmon, crab, shrimp, and common marine fish species found in the Puget Sound.
  • Must be familiar with salmon life history.
  • Knowledge of commercial and sport fishing methods and gear.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.

A minimum of twelve (12) months of: 

  • Fisheries experience. 
  • Experience creel sampling recreational and commercial fisheries in Puget Sound or a similar area.
