- Traveling throughout Western Washington to install hoof collection stations.
- Traveling for long periods by vehicle to retrieve hunter hoof submissions up to five days a week.
- Working with Regional Wildlife Program staff and/or volunteers to coordinate submission retrieval from remote locations.
Evaluate and dispose of hoof submissions. Tasks include:
- Efficiently examining fresh and/or frozen elk hooves for signs of Treponeme-associated hoof disease.
- Accurately recording submission data (e.g., hunter information, harvest location) and evaluation designation (e.g., normal/abnormal); disposing of submissions following internal standard operating procedures.
Assist with other field duties as time allows. Tasks include:
- Performing outreach and education to the public regarding Treponeme-associated hoof disease and WDFW’s hunter incentive program.
- Assisting with regional wildlife management activities such as wildlife surveys or associated tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- 90% Field work – Occurs in both remote and densely populated areas, and in challenging weather conditions (e.g., heat, rain, snow).
- Lift and move items (e.g., empty barrels, empty crates, and elk hooves) weighing between 3 – 50 pounds throughout the day when tasked.
- Schedule:
- Standard business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, 40 hours a week.
- Work occurs September through January (with the possibility of Wednesday through Sunday during busy times).
- Travel Requirements:
- Travel by vehicle on major highways in periods of heavy traffic, remote roadways with limited cellular connectivity, and unimproved roads requiring 4×4 vehicles.
- Overnight stays may be necessary.
- Tools and Equipment:
- 4×4 pickup truck, personal protective equipment, necropsy tools, data recording software, GPS, smartphone, laptop computer, hand tools.
- Customer Interactions:
- Frequent interactions with the public and hunters.
- Communication with the public must be respectful and positive.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
- Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of field experience as an assistant to a biologist or zoologist.
AND
- At least three (3) months previous experience on a field-based wildlife project requiring accurate data collection.
- Proficient with computer and mobile device software to record data.
- Willingness to work in cold/wet/hot conditions for long periods of time.
Please note: College course work involving a major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, natural resources, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
Certifications/Licenses
- A valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An interest in wildlife disease management.
Ability to:
- Maintain a positive and productive attitude while conducting repetitive tasks.
- Handle and examine dead animal parts for long periods of time.
- Record and organize field data.
- Operate a vehicle for long periods of time and navigate a vehicle using a hands-free device.
