Our Sport Fishery Samplers, provide technical field support by collecting creel information via angler interviews in the Skagit Basin.
 

Duties

Perform creel sampling. Tasks include:

  • Traveling around fishery areas by vehicle, boat, or foot to find anglers.
  • Talking with and interviewing individuals to see if they participated in the fishery and if so, asking predetermined questions about their experience and results and recording on data sheets.
  • Identifying salmonids to species and gender.
  • Observing and recording hatchery or researching marks on the fish.
  • Sampling fish as prescribed; may include, but not limited to, scanning for CWT, taking scales, collecting tissue for DNA, severing, and collecting the snout for coded wire tags, scanning for PIT, and collecting otoliths.
  • Occasionally flying in aircraft to count anglers.

 Collect and enter data. Tasks include: 

  • Legibly recording data from duties associated with creel sampling.
  • Entering, reviewing, and tabulating data to electronic devices and to existing spreadsheets and databases in Excel, Access, or other apps.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    • Variable weather conditions (e.g., rain, snow, sleet).
    • May encounter sharp knives, insects, moving and swift water.
    • Driving/pulling over on two lane highways and exiting vehicles.
    • Walking through grass brush and stickers to find anglers in remote locations; anglers can be contentious and combative.
    • Isolation during slow periods.
    • May encounter aggressive dogs and other animals.
  • Schedule:   
    • 24/7 as scheduled including nights, weekends, and holidays with overtime.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    • No overnight travel but long drives may be assigned to collect equipment.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    • Knives, clipboards, pencils and pens, paper, agency hat and other issued WDFW gear.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Regular interactions with the public.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

       OR 

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
 
Certifications/Licenses

  • A valid driver’s license

      AND

Ability to:

  • Operate motor vehicles.
  • Use personal computers or mobile devices/tablets for data entry and writing to produce accurate and timely work products.
  • Manipulate large or small fish and instruments with hands immersed in cold water.
  • Work outside in variable weather.
  • Work alone in remote areas in early morning and late evening.
  • Work near swift water and comply with personal flotation device requirements.
  • Effectively communicate with anglers and the general public in a manner to facilitate data gathering
  • Identify saltwater and river stage adult salmonids to species.
  • Work variable days with shifts up to 12 hours.
  • Spend long hours driving or sitting in a vehicle.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Previous experience using CWT scanner wand, PIT tag scanner, and other fish sampling equipment.
  • Knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • Ability to detect, identify, and record hatchery marks on salmonids.
