These are opportunities to assist with survey efforts for a variety of different species including greater sage-grouse, pygmy rabbits, ground squirrels, northern leopard frogs, common loons, and other waterfowl species.

With your experience, you will accurately and legibly record and organize data and other information into appropriate databases.

Duties

Our Eastern Washington Diversity Species Technicians, 

  • Follow established survey protocols to locate previously unknown greater sage-grouse leks.
  • Conduct surveys for Washington ground squirrels while listening for high pitched calls and looking for sign.
  • Work with the pygmy rabbit team to perform walking transect surveys for pygmy rabbit burrows and sign.
  • Assist with recovery and reintroduction efforts for federally endangered pygmy rabbit, including performing live trapping at burrows and other capture methods as well as transport.
  • Perform northern leopard frog egg mass and metamorphosis counts.
  • Assist with recovery and reintroduction efforts for state endangered northern leopard frog, including capture and transport.
  • Perform common loon nesting surveys.
  • Assist with outreach for common loon conservation.
  • Locate, establish, and maintain waterfowl trapping sites.
  • Monitor waterfowl trapping sites and maintain banding records.
  • Utilize handheld GPS to navigate to survey locations.
  • Accurately compile and enter collected data.
  • Properly maintain field equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Field work requires working in remote locations, hiking long distances on/off trail, along steep, rocky slopes, difficult terrain/surfaces during all weather conditions.
    2. Technicians will be expected to work in shallow wetland conditions involving frequent wading while carrying bait and trapping materials
    3. Field work also requires safely driving on unimproved roads using 4×4 vehicles and transporting equipment weighing up to 40 pounds over uneven terrain.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, although some weekends will be required during waterfowl banding season (July-August).
    2. Length of field day will vary with task and location, but work will often begin before dawn.
    3. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:   
    1. Travel from the duty stations to work locations in other districts.
    2. May require overnight stays or short periods in remote field stations, hotels, bunkhouses, or travel trailers, up to 20% of time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. GPS, remote cameras, binoculars, spotting scope, digital camera and 4×4 Trucks.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Much of the work will be conducted on private lands.
    2. Technicians will represent WDFW and act respectfully and strive for positive interactions with landowners and any public encountered.
    3. Public engagement and outreach to water recreators during common loon surveys.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science.

AND 

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Two (2) years of field experience working on wildlife research or conservation projects.

OR 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in natural sciences (wildlife, ecology, biology, conservation, or a related field) may substitute for one (1) year of professional experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to collect spatial data with GPS units and mobile devices.

Experience with: 

  • Wildlife identification and survey methods.
  • Greater sage-grouse surveys and monitoring.
  • Small mammal surveys.
  • Utilizing GIS software.
  • Utilizing GPS units and the ability to navigate off-trail in rugged terrain.
