The Scientific Technician 2 plays a key role in pursuit of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s mission to conserve, enhance, and restore native fish populations in Washington State. The Scientific Technician 2 position provides technical assistance to project lead biologists Lake Roosevelt Northern Pike Suppression Project. The Project is a cooperative effort by regional co-managers to suppress Northern Pike populations in Lake Roosevelt and region other regional waters. The Scientific Technician 2 also provides assistance for Fish Program activities associated with Fish Management in Region 1. Funding for this position is supported by WDFW Fish Management general funds associated with the Region 1 Lake Roosevelt Northern Pike Suppression Project. The activities of the Scientific Technician 2 are directly related to the conservation of native fish populations in eastern Washington.
- Duties
-
Primary duties may include but are not limited to:
Conducts field surveys
Tasks include:
- Conducts field surveys associated with Northern Pike suppression activities in Region 1.
- Collects and records biological data on fish including species identification, total length, fork length, and weight.
- Collects biological samples including ageing structures, genetic tissue and diet samples.
- Checks fish for existing tags/marks and uses a variety of techniques to mark fish.
Maintain field equipment
Tasks include:
- Maintains and repairs fish sampling equipment including but not limited to gill nets, dip nets, anchors, ropes, electronic balances, PIT tag readers, GPS units, and personal protective equipment.
- Keeps gear organized and in good working condition.
Compiles and enters data
Tasks include:
- Assists lead biologists and project technician staff to maintain original field data in an organized manner that is accessible by biological staff.
- Compiles field data and enters data into computer using Microsoft Office programs (EXCEL, Word) and conducts quality assurance/quality control to ensure data is free of errors and ready for analysis.
Other duties as assigned
Tasks include:
- Reviews and complies with WDFW policies and procedures as required for employment.
- Assists with activities associated with Fish Management in Region 1 as directed. Prioritizes safety at all times.
- Works with staff to complete tasks in an efficient and timely manner.

Working Conditions
Working setting, including hazards:
- Work is primarily conducted in field and warehouse settings and involves many hours of vehicle travel. Field work is conducted during inclement weather (including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, ice, and working in cold water for long periods of time).
- Field work is primarily conducted on a boat for long hours on large bodies of water. Boat conditions include slippery, wet, uneven surfaces and wavy conditions.
- Requires repetitive heavy lifting associated with setting and pulling gill nets (up to 50 lbs.).
- May require working more than 8 hours per day on a boat in a team setting. Work is conducted primarily during the day but may extend into the evening on occasion.
- Requires repetitive lifting and carrying equipment weighing 75 pounds or more for short distances.
Schedule:
- Up to 40 hours/ week, M-F (variable depending on peak workload)
Tools and Equipment:
- Boats, manual hand tools, electronic balances, handheld GPS, net repair tools, fish picks, knives.
Housing
- No housing is available for these positions
Travel Requirements:
- Requires extensive travel time within the workday.
License:
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license
Customer Interactions:
- May interact with the public at the boat ramps and on the water.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”
- Qualifications

Preferred work experience:
- Experience conducting gill net surveys
- Proficient in identification of eastern Washington fish species.
- Familiar with setting and pulling gill nets.
- Must be able and willing to conduct suppression activities including handling large numbers of fish in various states of disposition and euthanize invasive Northern Pike.
- Ability to have meaningful dialogue regarding work activities with supervisors and biological staff.
- Must be able to communicate in a professional manner with technician staff to ensure activities are accomplished in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to record data accurately and legibly according to direction of biological staff.
- Must be organized and detail oriented.
- Ability to accommodate a rigorous and variable schedule.
