- Duties

Technicians sampling for invasive speciesKEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Zebra and Quagga Mussel Early Detection Monitoring
Tasks include:- Survey high risk water bodies using multiple sampling methods such as horizontal and vertical water plankton tows, artificial substrates, visual shoreline surveys, water quality.
Office work
Tasks include:
- Data entry into databases
- Organize, file, and summarize field data.
Equipment Maintenance
Tasks include:
- Maintains vehicle, watercraft, trailer, electronic tablet, laptop, smart phone, laptop, smart phone, and complex mobile water quality laboratory in a safe and working order.
Other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work setting including hazards:
- Approximately 80% of the job is done in the field and 20% in the office.
- Outdoors on water and land in inclement weather, mostly as a team, but may work independently in remote locations, day and night, walk up to five miles on uneven ground, must be able to lift 75 pounds, and pack 50 pounds.
Schedule:
- Sunday to Saturday first 40.
- Workweek will be the first 40 hours of work per week (24/7) but will be required occasionally to exceed these hours.
- Incumbent may work outside of the normal workweek during holidays, weekends and may be required to respond on short notice to rapid response AIS emergencies.
Travel Requirements:
- This position requires weekly statewide travel and overnight stays up to five days at times.
Tools and Equipment:
- Personal computers, laptops, smart phones, electronic tablets, and electronic software forms.
- Complex mobile water quality laboratory, eDNA, and non-electronic biological and environmental sampling devices.
- Must safely transport and operate large equipment up to a 25-foot cargo trailer, watercraft, flatbed trailer, winches, motor vehicles, and complex hot water trailered pressure washers.
Customer Interactions:
- Interacts with the public on a regular basis while conducting fieldwork.
- Occasionally confronted by citizens that are non-compliant or not cooperative
Certifications/License:
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license required.
- State Boater Education Card or equivalent.
- Qualifications

- Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
- Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
NOTE: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
Preferred Job Knowledge and Experience:
- Boat operation knowledge and experience, WDFW motorboat operator’s certification or equivalent.
- Trailer operation knowledge and experience.
- Computer and other electronic devices operational knowledge.
- Oral and written communications,
- Interpersonal relationships based on integrity and honesty,
- Creativity and innovation both in working independently and in team building.
- Public service and partnership building motivation,
- Working independently, and
- Workload management.
