This recruitment is essential to maintain operations and fulfill WDFW’s legal obligations: Essential due to:  Maintain animal husbandry, maintain hatchery operations to ensure fish/animals stay alive and associated testing/vet response etc.

These positions support the operation of the automated/manual mass marking and coded wire tagging mobile wet lab at hatcheries statewide.  Plans, organizes, directs, and conducts coded wire tag experiments.   Analyzes coded wire tag data to determine contribution rates, allocation, brood-stock identification, and effect of mark selective fisheries.  This position contributes to the Agency goals of conservation of wild salmon through coded wire tagging and mass marking.

Duties

Supporting automated mobile wet lab operations by manually applying adipose clips and coded wire tags to outsized and machine rejected fish.

Tasks include: 

  • Assisting Bio 2 and Bio 1 Auto-Fish marking and tagging system operators in monitoring machine rejected fish and other daily lab tasks as needed.
  • Manual clipping of adipose fin and using MKIV tag injector to tag juvenile hatchery salmon.
  • Application of fish anesthetic. Monitor work product and fish health to provide sound scientific results.

Working Conditions 
Working sitting, including hazards: 

  • Automated coded wire tag mobile wet lab, hatchery environment, working during inclement weather.
  • Ability to be on feet all day, ability to lift 40 pounds commonly, ability to work around hatchery ponds, and catwalks over hatchery ponds.

 Schedule: 

  • This is a fulltime temporary position.
  • 8:00 – 5:00 Monday – Friday with considerable overtime and possible shift work mainly in the spring.

 Travel Requirements:

  • Extensive travel and driving required.  Up to 6-months per year, 5 days a week. 

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Ability to use electric hand tools, basic hand tools.

License:

  • A valid Washington State or other state’s driver’s license.

Customer Interactions:

  • Interacts with Biologists, hatchery Staff, Tribal staff and general public.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”

Qualifications

High School graduation or GED

Preferred/ Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience adipose fin marking and manually tagging juvenile salmonids.
  • Experience working in a salmon hatchery environment.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
