WDFW Fish Program – Hatchery Division

Multiple Locations  Statewide

Anticipated Appointment Lengths Vary: 2-weeks to 2-months

We’re at a critical point in our annual effort to mark more than 100 million hatchery salmon and steelhead for release into waterways throughout Washington.

Marking these fish is essential for anglers’ ability to catch fish statewide, and to help conserve native fish populations, but we’ve had trouble finding enough people to do this work in 2021, especially in rural areas, and we’re asking for your help sharing this employment and volunteer opportunity with your networks.

In most locations there are day, swing, and possible weekend shifts available. These jobs pay $15.74/hour, working 40 hours per week, with the ability to start immediately. COVID safety protocols are followed. Applicants must be 18 or older.

Duties

We are also currently accepting volunteers to help with this work; anyone interested in volunteering must first register online as a volunteer at the WDFW website, then use the hatchery list above to contact a facility near them to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

If these fish aren’t clipped, it could negatively impact fisheries across the state.

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Supporting manual mass marking operations by manually applying adipose clips. 

Tasks include: 

These positions clip the adipose fins of juvenile salmon and steelhead utilizing surgical scissors under close supervision and thorough instruction.  Duties may include coded-wire tagging, fin clipping, body tagging, and other markings as required. Additionally, they may also assist the Fish ID Lead in other duties such as inspection for quality of marking, trailer set up, entering ponds to crowd fish and transfer fish from ponds or net pens to the trailer. This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time and use scissors repeatedly throughout the course of the day.

Manual clipping of adipose fin. Monitor work product to provide quality results. May be asked to seine fish and load the trailer to keep marking operations going when hatchery staff are not available.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work setting including hazards:

  • Work is performed in a manual mass marking trailer, in a hatchery environment which includes working in/around hatchery ponds, and catwalks over hatchery ponds.
  • Work is performed during inclement weather, includes being on your feet all day, and frequently lifting 40 pounds. 

Schedule: 

  • 24/7.  Shifts may be day, swing, or weekend.
  • Generally working 8 hours a day.

 Travel Requirements: 

  • None, this is a project-based position located at the where work is performed.

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Scissors, basic hand tools, seine nets.

Customer Interactions:

  • Interacts with Biologists, Hatchery personnel, Tribal staff, and general public.

License:

  • An unrestricted driver’s license valid in Washington is required.

Qualifications

Preferred/Desired qualifications:

  • Experience adipose fin marking and manually tagging juvenile salmonids.
  • Experience working in a salmon hatchery environment
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
