The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an outgoing individual to join the Environmental Services Office as the Restoration Crew Lead in Tumwater, WA. In this project position, you will be responsible for providing assistance in planning and implementing management activities at environmental mitigation sites and roadside restoration sites statewide. This position coordinates with the Wetlands Program monitoring staff to provide observations of site conditions, reports management activities conducted on mitigation sites, organize, manage, and troubleshoot complex projects effectively, and leads the restoration crew staff in the field. What to Expect
This position is regularly assigned to perform work duties at a field worksite. Therefore, travel is an expectation of this position on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Restoration Crew Lead will:
- Lead a field team to conduct adaptive management activities to maintain compliance with environmental permits and all applicable laws and policies.
- Accomplish and supervise vegetation control including, but not limited to, herbicide application (aquatic and rights-of-way), and mechanical removal of trees and vegetation, with small power equipment.
- Read and interpret maps and plan sheets, identify native and non-native plant species.
- Assist the Restoration Crew Supervisor with coordination activities including on site field reviews and makes suggestions for site remediation and management plans with WSDOT site managers.
- Conduct adaptive management strategies on statewide environmental mitigation sites with information from both field reviews and site monitoring reports.
- Enter data into the electronic database of restoration crew daily work activities and herbicide application records.
- Maintain inventory to assist the Restoration Crew Supervisor in ordering necessary supplies, equipment, and pesticide for completion of appropriate site management activities.
- Collect supplemental qualitative environmental monitoring data on vegetation, hydrology, and wildlife.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of experience as a licensed WSDA public operator and aquatic pesticide applicator, including determining rates, mixing, and multiple application methods.
- Two (2) years of experience performing manual or chemical, vegetation control.
- Two (2) years of experience installing native wetland and upland species of plants.
- Ability to visually identify native and non-native plant species during active growth and dormancy.
- Ability to carry out manual labor including manipulating and transporting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, work on uneven terrain and slopes, and work in high places wearing a fall restraint harness.
- Ability to maintain a WA State Department of Agriculture public applicators license with appropriate endorsements.
- Skills to communicate instructions both orally and in writing to staff.
- A valid driver’s license.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- A valid Washington State traffic control flaggers card.
