This position:
The Washington Geological Survey, part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is seeking a Reservoir Characterization Geologist to join a talented team that conducts research on earth resources across Washington State, including carbon sequestration, geothermal resources, and groundwater hydrogeology. DNR’s mission is to manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington’s lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations. Your role in this mission will be to develop and lead projects that will identify, investigate, map, and report on potential subsurface reservoirs for carbon mineralization and clean energy storage.

This position serves as a subject matter expert on subsurface reservoir characterization, providing technical guidance in support of agency decision-making, liaising with partners, and advising on key policy concerns and issues regarding carbon sequestration, hydrogen storage, and similar or related technologies statewide. This position is responsible for independently conducting innovative research in assessing reservoir potential in various geologic settings and for various purposes, developing and managing grants and contracts to conduct research, publishing findings, and communicating opportunities and risks to industry partners and the public.

Duties

Responsibilities:
- Performs innovative research and publishes data, reports, and other products on the locations, types, and qualities of subsurface reservoir targets in Washington State for carbon sequestration, hydrogen storage, and similar technologies.
- Conducts fieldwork, literature review, and analysis to characterize potential reservoirs, using geologic mapping, map interpretation, exploration and borehole geophysics, crustal stress analysis, structural analysis, drilling, and lab analyses of rock, soil, and water, along with an understanding of properties of fluid flow in permeable media.
- Develops methods, collects and analyzes data, and uses GIS and other tools to integrate data and interpretations into favorability, potential, and risk maps at various scales, or other products as needed.
- Undertakes data collection and analyses in support of economic and risk analyses on infrastructure and resources for use in decision-making.
- Represents the Survey and Agency on statewide storage-related policy workgroups or meetings relating to carbon sequestration, hydrogen storage, or similar technologies.
- Establishes relationships with partners/peers in key state and federal agencies to maintain awareness of activities outside of DNR, identify and take advantage of collaborative opportunities, and learn of new technological advancements or efforts.
- Seeks external funding through grants and contracts to augment the program’s research capacity.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in geology or related science,
AND four years of professional geology experience;
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Experience in successful project management, developing budgets, work plans, and proposals.
- Experience in conducting field investigations.
- Documented skills in public speaking and written communication.
- Two years of experience in the design and use of geospatial databases, data visualization software, and modeling techniques, including GIS.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.

- Primarily office-based, with options for flexible telework, and occasional fieldwork, which may include rough terrain.
- Some travel for conferences, in-person meetings, workshops, etc. Occasional overnight fieldwork.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- This position requires a Washington Geology License, obtained within 1 year of hire, or through reciprocity.
- Master’s degree with a major study in geology or a closely related field.
- Experience with carbon sequestration and hydrogen storage technologies and applications, including subsurface reservoir characterization and/or modeling.
