Research Coordinator – Seabirds
This position is responsible for coordination of seabird research projects at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Education/Experience Requirements:
Required qualifications: MSc degree in biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, or related field, or BSc degree with minimum 2 years of experience in a related field. Proficiency in computer skills, experience with data management, and basic knowledge about statistical analysis of data. Knowledge and experience with field operations and experience in coordinating research projects, including specific experience in field studies with marine birds. Knowledge and experience in bird survey and bird identification skills, with identification skills of Alaskan marine birds desired. Experience in experimental research in controlled laboratory conditions desired.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Functions as a lead coordinator for assigned research projects conducted at the Alaska SeaLife Center.
2. Coordinates and provides assistance to the PI on research projects, including scheduling, coordinating field projects, project planning and administration (assistance with proposals, permits, budgets, reports, publications), and general logistics.
3. Coordinates and conducts avian research projects in the Kenai Fjords area. Coordinates and conducts bird surveys, including year round coastal surveys, seasonal surveys of Kittlitz’s and marbled murrelets, and seasonal juvenile surveys of murrelets and pigeon guillemots. Assists with survey count and habitat data analysis.
4. Coordinates and operates remote observation systems to monitor productivity and other breeding parameters in seabirds. Summarizes and analyzes data from remote data acquisition systems.
5. Coordinates and conducts sea duck research projects in coastal Alaska: coordinates field logistics, conducts field research in coastal marine waters involving sea duck surveys and sampling, and habitat analysis.
6. Coordinates experimental research investigating impacts of algal blooms in seabirds
7. Participates in and coordinates citizen science projects monitoring seabirds.
8. Coordinates and conducts other research projects as assigned, potentially involving field work at remote locations in Alaska.
9. Manages research databases and conducts statistical analysis of research data as assigned.
10. Prepares presentations and publications of research as assigned.
11. Coordinates management of the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies to be used in research projects.
12. Supervises personnel matters for Research Technicians, interns, and volunteers/interns as assigned. Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, delegates authority, and sets and reviews performance goals.
13. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
14. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate tasks; ability to communicate clearly and interact effectively and professionally with staff, researchers, volunteers, and the general public; ability to work independently and pay close attention to detail. Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, R or similar statistical package, and GIS experience.
