Department Summary
The Oregon Hazards Lab (O-HAZ) uses science, technology, and community engagement to understand, monitor, and mitigate multi-hazards within the Pacific Northwest. O-HAZ resides as a research facility within the Department of Earth Sciences (ERTH), consisting of ERTH faculty, 7 full-time professional staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and temporary specialists. O-HAZ works with broad consortium of collaborators within the University of Oregon and with external groups across the Northwestern U.S.
The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 42 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, seven research associates, ten post-docs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeriti faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and pro tempore instructors.
Position Summary
The Oregon Hazards Lab (O-HAZ) seeks a skilled logistics specialist to pursue our mission of real-time, multi-hazards monitoring. Based in Eugene, OR at the University of Oregon (UO) within the Department of Earth Sciences, this position travels across Oregon and adjacent states to site, permit, and coordinate installation of seismic monitoring stations. On campus, activities will focus on formalization of permits, planning with O-HAZ staff, and coordination with external contractors. All work shall contribute to a system that collects scientific data to increase public safety and resiliency.
We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision as well as in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with the federal, state, and local agencies to define and employ best practices, and to communicate technological innovations.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business, or other relevant discipline, or the equivalent experience
Professional Competencies
• Strong communication skills via phone, email, and in-person
• Strong organizational skills, ability to meet deliverable goals
• Proven ability to work well both autonomously and in a team-oriented group
• Ability and willingness to travel outdoors, off-road, and in adverse weather as needed
• Knowledge of NEPA processes and related documentation
Preferred Qualifications
• Experienced in radio telemetry systems in both the licensed and unlicensed spectrum
• Knowledgeable in basic networking protocols
• Experience with deploying scientific equipment in remote field settings
• Experience with UO Contracting
