Responsibilities:
The Regulation and Preventions Technician has a great influence on the quality, image, and message delivered to the general public of Washington State. This position works closely with stakeholders and other agencies and plays a leadership role in fire suppression activities.  

The majority of the duties will include administering and approving burn permits, interpreting/applying fire regulations and IFPL restrictions, conducting wildland fire investigations, and fire suppression. This position will act as a Wildland Fire Investigator regularly. The Regulation and Prevention Technician will work closely with fire suppression resources to suppress and prevent the spread of wildland fire.  

Other duties will include but are not limited to being a lead and/or unit instructor for NWCG fire courses for wildland fire training, leading, and participating in wildland fire prevention activities. The Northeast Region is a fast-paced and complex work environment that requires an individual who will work within the team’s goals and dynamics to be successful.

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Experience With:
  • Firefighting techniques, practices, terminology, equipment, and other resources for wildland fire management including support needs, communications, and safety precautions.
  • Wildland fire regulatory practices, and burn permit processes.
  • Fire weather technology, weather’s effect on various fuel types, and knowledge of weather as it influences fire behavior.
  • Professionally communicating with a variety of groups including subordinates, superiors, the public, and other partner organizations both written, verbal, and face-to-face, especially in stressful situations.
  • Developing and maintaining cooperative, effective working relationships both internally and externally.
• NWCG Qualifications:
  • Single Resource Boss
  • Incident Commander Type 5
• Proven experience in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, mapping, and Global Positioning technology.
• General knowledge of conducting Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination investigations.

• The fire suppression work is strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to traverse uneven and mountainous terrain. 
• Must pass an annual physical fitness “pack” test at the arduous level.
• The position will be assigned an agency vehicle. The position requires significant driving and field visits within geographically assigned areas.
• Ability to obtain NWCG “Red Card” Qualification of Wildland Fire Investigator within 18 months of appointment. 
• Ability to obtain NWCG “Red Card” Qualification of Incident Commander Type 4 within two years of appointment.
• A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 

• A Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in a Fire Science, Natural Resource, or related field. Alternatively, two years of wildland fire fighting experience with one year of experience supervising wildland firefighters.
• NWCG Qualifications:
  • 2 NWCG Single Resource Boss qualifications, one being Engine Boss or Crew Boss
  • NWCG Incident Commander Type 4
  • NWCG Wildland Fire Investigator
• Skilled in supervision, leadership, and management of people.
