Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is recruiting to fill three full-time, permanent Region Superintendent vacancies in the Operations Division.
 
Regions, Geographic Area Covered, and Duty Stations: 
Southwest Region includes all coastal parks and properties, the Olympic Peninsula, and all parks and properties in the southwest section of the state.  The duty station for this Region Superintendent position is Tumwater, WA.
 
Northwest Region includes all parks and properties west of the Cascades and north of Chehalis, WA, excluding the Olympic Peninsula.  The duty station for this Region Superintendent positions can be either Burlington, WA or Tumwater, WA.
 
Eastern Region includes all parks and properties east of the Cascades.  The duty station for this Region Superintendent position is Wenatchee, WA.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Region Superintendent is ultimately responsible for park operations and business management, strategic planning, and project prioritization in the region. This position provides a critical leadership role within the agency, overseeing one-third of the Washington State Parks’ system of parks, properties, trails, facilities, and recreational and interpretive activities.  This position ensures that all facets of park management and operations are effectively being carried out in conformance with agency performance expectations and standards to achieve the agency mission. Park Operations includes managing a collection of varied day use and camping parks, roofed accommodations and vacation rentals, natural and cultural resources, other properties open to the public and/or long-distance trails. This includes all aspects of managing the site location, the visitors and employees, including customer experience, stewardship, law enforcement, maintenance, staffing, community relations, collaboration with indigenous tribes, partnerships and more.  
 
The Region Superintendent sets the standards for performance, leadership, employee development, and accountability for the staff they oversee.  Total staff directly and indirectly supervised by the Region Superintendent is approximately 275, and includes Region Managers, Region staff, park managers, law enforcement, construction/maintenance, interpretive, park rangers, administrative, and customer service staff. The Region Superintendent directly supervises Region Managers and other region management and support staff, and has regular and significant collaboration with the highest level managers within and outside of the Operations division. They are involved in leading resolution for the Region’s most complex, sensitive issues, and/or high-profile issues, and support and collaborate with their Region Managers on other complex or unprecedented situations. Region Superintendents work together and with the Operations Director to determine and advance division and agency goals.  They are also critical to inter-division cooperation, creating strong partnerships with other agency leaders and lending support to their efforts, working toward resolution when conflict arises.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree **
  • Three (3) years of experience in a natural resources field/outdoor recreation field or organization.**
  • Seven (7) years of supervision at the professional level. 
  • Valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver’s license.

**Equivalent experience in a natural resources or outdoor recreation field or management experience in a natural resource/outdoor recreation agency may substitute year for year for education.  
 **Any experience counted as substitution for education will not be counted for the 3 years of required experience.
 
This position requires a fingerprint criminal background investigation prior to employment. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment, but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • One (1) year supervising managers of teams.
  • Experience working in a parks system.
  • Experience managing budget and expenditures in a government setting.
  • Experience leading employees in public-facing positions.
  • Experience working with sovereign tribes.

Location, Availability and Travel Requirements
 
Region Superintendent positions are based out of one of three region offices as noted at the top of this recruitment, and require a minimum of 3 days per week in the region office. Teleworking may be an option for the remaining time.    

Region Superintendents need to be available for calls and possible in-person response during non-working hours (evenings and weekends) for critical and emergent park situations, although vacations and other time off work can be covered by Region Managers and peers.  This position has some travel requirements, including overnight travel.
