Salary- $59,688.00 – $80,292.00

Responsibilities:

  • Developing recreation policy in the form of guidance, procedures, or agency policies.
  • Drafting legislation and regulations, and providing legislative analysis.
  • Providing assistance and guidance to region staff regarding policy implementation.
  • Providing statewide guidance for all DNR Recreation’s volunteer based programs.
  • Representing DNR on work groups and committees with other agencies and recreation partners.
  • Managing statewide cooperative agreements and contracts with partners and consultants.
  • Developing and tracking the Policy Unit’s biennial budget

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public administration, environmental studies, outdoor recreation, natural resource sciences or a related field.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Current trends in natural resource issues, environmental laws (including SEPA), policies and programs.
    • Natural resources planning principles, methods and techniques
    • Governmental administrative structure at state and local levels
    • Social and other problems affecting development of local and state environmental resources programs, department programs and related laws, regulations and policies.
  • Highly developed writing skills including the ability to precisely and concisely present information to both technical and layman audiences using proper grammar and DNR format conventions.
  • Fluency in current word processing and spreadsheet software used by DNR or similar software.
  • Ability to conduct internal and external outreach and communication related to the programs, policies, and plans developed by the Planning Unit. This includes the ability to communicate in both small and large group settings.
  • Ability to accurately interpret agency laws, regulations and policies.
  • Must possess excellent research skills, including knowledge of online and library sources and databases of information pertaining to natural resources management in Washington State and the U.S.
  • Must be proficient in self-management to effectively conduct work and achieve results.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and foster innovation and change.
  • Must develop personal skills and effectively communicate, providing excellent internal and external customer service
