The mission of the State Forest Division is to manage Board of Forestry lands to achieve greatest permanent value to provide economic, environmental, and social benefits to Oregonians. Timber sales on these forests produce jobs and revenue that funds counties, local districts, and schools throughout the state. We have (1) one permanent, full-time, Recreation Planning Coordinator position available in the State Forests Recreation Division within the Oregon Department of Forestry. This position is based out of Northwest Oregon Area (NWOA), with the option of duty station located in Astoria, Forest Grove or Tillamook. What You Will Do

You will support the implementation of the State Forest Division planning cycle, to develop short and mid-range operational plans (Annual Operation and Implementation Plans) for recreation projects and infrastructure and other land management activities to ensure that Division goals and objectives are met. You will support and coordinate work flow between other operational units (i.e. timber sales, road development, etc.) to ensure there is alignment around recreation resource planning objectives. For 5 months of the year you will also support facility and campground operations.

Because the Department’s highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways.  That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters.  It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.

What We Are Looking For

  • Two years of experience in outdoor recreation planning, natural resource planning, or outdoor recreation management, which includes assisting with a) development and implementation short and mid-range recreation management plans, b) development of recreation facility maintenance plans, c) grant planning, writing, and grant project administration, d) recreation facility planning, design and development, and e) development of trail system plans, and a Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation planning, natural resource planning, or outdoor recreation management, or three additional years of related outdoor recreation planning experience which includes assisting with a) development and implementation of short and mid-range recreation management plans, b) development of recreation facility maintenance plans, c) grant planning, writing, and grant project administration, d) recreation facility planning, design and development, and e) development of trail system plans;
  • OR one year of experience in outdoor recreation planning, natural resource planning, or outdoor recreation management, which includes assisting with a) development and implementation short and mid-range recreation management plans, b) development of recreation facility maintenance plans, c) grant planning, writing, and grant project administration, d) recreation facility planning, design and development, and e) development of trail system plans, and a Master’s degree in outdoor recreation management, recreation planning, or social dimensions of natural resource management.

Candidates who are the most competitive will also reflect the following:

  • Experience in Recreation and natural resource planning, including developing recreation management plans, trail system plans, recreation facility and trail project plans, and the ability to integrate recreation planning with other forest management activities and resources.
  • Experience coordinating with resource specialists and staff (biologists, engineers, geologist, land managers, recreation staff, reforestation, etc.) to develop recreation plans, trail system plans, and trail and facility project plans and to resolve complex natural resource issues.
  • Experience planning and managing recreation trail and facility development projects
  • Experience and skill in grant planning, grant writing, and grant administration.
  • Highly effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build internal and external working relationships.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to provide exceptional customer service in a variety of settings.
  • Strong team member with the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve agency, program, and project goals and objectives.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to provide guidance and support to team members and volunteers.
  • Motivated individual with the ability to set goals and to prioritize, organize and accomplish tasks.
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to evaluate situations, apply rules and guidelines, and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Experience using ArcGIS to create and update spatial information and databases, to evaluate and analyze data, and to develop maps and reports.
  • Strong background and experience in Recreation management and operations and maintenance of recreation facilities such as campgrounds, trails, trailheads, picnic areas, OHV staging areas, and interpretive sites.

  • More than 3 moving traffic violations in the previous 12 months;
