PRIVATE LANDS/WILDLIFE CONFLICT TECHNICIAN
NATURAL RESOURCE TECHNICIAN 2 (NRT2)

Colville, Washington – Stevens County

 

In this dynamic role, assist the Private Lands program to design, develop, and implement hunter access programs on private lands, fostering public access for fish and wildlife recreation. 

You will also be involved in the Wildlife Conflict program by addressing livestock depredations, handling nuisance wildlife complaints, and issuing necessary permits.

Working alongside private landowners to improve, protect, and restore wildlife habitat, emphasizing habitat improvements for white-tailed deer, turkey, forest grouse and waterfowl. 

This is an opportunity,

To assist the District Wildlife Conflict Specialist with addressing bear, cougar and wolf conflicts, reports, or complaints, including working with livestock producers.  

With your strong communication skills, 

Educate the public about wildlife conflict programs and offer solutions for deer, elk, moose, and turkey.

Some of what our Private Lands/Wildlife Conflict Technician will enjoy doing, 

Wildlife conflict: 

  • Assist the Wildlife Conflict Specialist with wildlife conflict duties surrounding livestock depredation, nuisance, and dangerous wildlife complaints. Develop and issue wildlife conflict contracts and permits. 
  • Respond to nuisance wildlife and wildlife damage complaints to commercial crops.
  • Use a firearm to dispatch sick or injured wildlife and haze or aversively condition wildlife.
  • Create contracts and issue permits to landowners for DPCA and DPCA-L programs.
  • Coordinate with regional and statewide wildlife conflict staff on projects, meetings and training as required.

 

Hunter access programs: 

  • Develop and implement hunter access programs on private timberlands and private agricultural lands in Northeast Washington.  
  • Provide direction and education to the public regarding hunter access opportunities on private lands. 
  • Conduct landowner interviews, write reports and assist with hunter access contract development.
  • Provide landowners with the materials necessary for the implementation of the WDFW hunter access program including Hunting Only by Written Permission, Hunting by Reservation, Feel Free to Hunt and Cooperative Road Management.  
  • Provide signs and posting materials and assist with posting of property boundaries. 

 

Habitat development:

  • Work with private landowners to improve, protect and restore wildlife habitat.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including steep slopes and snow and ice.
    • Often includes walking, bending, stooping over uneven terrain while carrying, loading, and/or transporting up to 40 pounds of equipment and gear.  
    • Will perform capturing and handling of wildlife and routine and repetitive work.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
    • Must be available for non-scheduled workweek and hours. This will include irregular and long hours and/or weekends
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Periodic travel out of the normal area of responsibility will be required. Overnight travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Basic hand tools, cordless power tools, chainsaw, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), 4×4 pickup, wildlife capture and telemetry equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Will interact with private landowners, various members of the public, DFW employees. Perform in a punctual and dependable manner.  

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of experience in one (1) or more of the following fields: agriculture, range management, land management, animal husbandry, parks and recreation, wildlife management. 

OR

  • Three (3) years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 1, Natural Resource Worker 2 or Scientific Technician 1. 

 

Please Note: College coursework involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, wildlife, chemistry, natural sciences, or a closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience.

Experience: 

  • Recording data accurately and legibly
  • Visually differentiate when identifying and distinguishing biological and physical features
  • Effectively and safely operate standard highway vehicles, ATV’s and trailers.
  • Safely using hand and power tools, including chainsaws.
  • Using GPS, computer with Microsoft software for word processing, spreadsheet applications, web-based tools, email, and calendar clients.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to legally possess a firearm.
  • This position has been designated as one for which possession and use of department-issued firearms is required and essential to performing the job duties. Must successfully meet all requirements of agency firearm policy (Policy 7011) and maintain eligibility to possess and use agency-issued firearm(s) at all times while in this position.

The following must be completed within one (1) year of employment:

  • First Aid training
  • Firearms training and certification
  • Pesticide Applicator’s license
  • ATV certification
  • Chainsaw operator training
  • Heat-related illness training.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

Job knowledge:

  • WDFW hunter access and habitat programs.
  • Fish and wildlife habitat management requirements. 
  • WDFW hunting and fishing regulations.
  • Private landowner issues.
  • Fish and wildlife species identification.
  • Local and state laws governing land use.
  • WDFW wildlife conflict/wildlife control policies and procedures.
