Embrace this role to support the agency’s mission by serving as key member of the Priority Habitats and Species (PHS) team.
 
With your experience, you will produce spatial data under the supervision of subject matter experts and deliver data to users consistent with data security policies.
 
We are seeking a candidate with technical, critical thinking, and customer service skills to support land use decision makers in the conservation of Priority Habitats and Priority Species.
 
 
WHAT TO EXPECT –
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
 
Produce and Maintain PHS Spatial Data.

  • Work with subject matter experts (SMEs) to spatially represent each Priority Habitat and Priority Species to support users’ conservation decisions and increase PHS mapping consistency and quality. This entails utilizing knowledge of GIS and remote sensing to develop and perform analysis tasks with ArcGIS Pro such as reprojecting, clipping, joining data, and buffering data. 
  • Create and maintain a library of PHS spatial data and associated metadata.
  • At the direction of SMEs, write scripts that identify areas affected by sensitive species.
Deliver PHS Data to External Users.
  • Write and maintain scripts that assemble digital PHS spatial data within a user’s area of interest for users who have access to GIS.
  • Write and maintain scripts that produce pdf PHS maps for users who do not have GIS.
  • Deliver PHS spatial products (digital GIS data and pdf maps) to users in keeping with data security requirements.
  • Oversee the execution and management of data sharing agreements with recipients of sensitive PHS data. File, track, and retain records in keeping with agency policies.
Customer and Staff Support.
  • Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify, assess, and resolve customer and staff needs related to PHS data use. 
  • Train regional staff how to use internal PHS spatial tools and GIS layers.
Upgrade PHS Spatial Tools.
  • Research and propose Esri Hub Sites and other cartographic technologies or data sources for use by PHS.
  • Write technical specifications for vendor contracts.
 
Working Conditions:
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with options for flexible / compressed schedules. Telework up to 80%.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:

 
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in cartography, geography, photogrammetry, GIS, remote sensing, natural resources, or closely related field.
 
And
 
One (1) year of professional geographic information systems (GIS), cartographic production, and/or remote sensing experience.
 
Please note: Additional years of education in GIS or Cartography may substitute for the required experience.  Closely related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of GIS, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of principles of cartography and Python and SQL scripting.
  • Ability to develop and employ Python and/or ModelBuilder for automating ArcGIS Pro tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take interest in and understand others’ perspectives; easily recognize when others have important information, perspectives, or ideas; demonstrate appropriate assertiveness; and be committed to the service of the public, mission, and team.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
  • Experience creating, editing, and managing spatial data (raster and vector).
  • Knowledge of map projections; aerial image interpretation; statistical accuracy; and extract, transform, and load processes (ETL).
  • Knowledge of remote sensing processes and concepts. 
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Awareness of and ability to manage one’s emotions.
  • Ability to put oneself in another’s place and take interest in and understand the perspectives of others.
  • Ability to seek and easily recognize when others have important information, perspectives, or better ideas.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of mediums including oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to think independently and creatively to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to comply with timeliness while delivering high-quality products.
  • Ability to consult with peers and IT professionals when necessary or beneficial.
