The Position

About this position:
The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader for Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is responsible for providing leadership and direction to a park maintenance work crew and assure that work projects are completed in accordance with plans and specifications in a safe and efficient manner directed by the Supervisor. The Incumbents must have a thorough knowledge of operations, projects, and equipment in that assigned area. The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader is distinguished from a lead worker, as defined by the Portland City Laborers (PCL) labor agreement, by greater responsibility for clarifying and scheduling work, assigning crews, and for less job time spent working with crews on-site.   The current vacancy is in Turf Maintenance. 
The eligible list for this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies.  Some positions may require a Commercial Driver’s License and / or Pesticide Applicator License.
 
 As a Parks Maintenance Crew Leader, you will: 

  • Train, and mentor employees reflective of the diverse communities in Portland.
  • Supervise a skilled team that includes  full time employees and multiple seasonal employees.
  • Provide day to day support and coordination for staff.
  • Create, edit, and monitor crew’s schedules and ensure accurate time entry.
  • Answer questions and concerns from the public providing strong customer service and a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Review and comment on proposed park improvements and development.
  • Partner and resource with community organizations to increase access to nature for BIPOC communities.
  • Contribute to the achievement of PP&R’s Five-Year Racial Equity Plan
  • Respond to calls to work during emergencies, including coordinating emergency work crews.

 Work Location
Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19.  In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.

To Qualify

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their responses to the supplemental questions and their résumé how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and experience using methods, materials, environmental conditions, constructs, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of park facilities for assigned area, such as turf, landscapes, trails, utility systems, hardscapes and park amenities.
  2. Knowledge and experience applying codes and regulations including hazards and safety practices involved in work, pedestrian and vehicular traffic control and safety.
  3. Knowledge and experience utilizing project planning, directing, scheduling and/or coordinating diverse construction projects such as labor and material estimating and material procurement.
  4. Ability and experience exercising tact, diplomacy, and persuasion with a diversity of people such as employee relations and effective leadership instructing and overseeing others in the use of tools and equipment in assigned areas.
  5. Experience keeping accurate records and work accomplishment using electronic devices and written records to account for hours, material, equipment and other related information.
  6. Experience interpreting blueprints and applying principles and practices in construction management.
