This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) full-time, permanent, Parks Interpretive Specialist 2 position for Moran State Park located in San Juan County. Housing is not available for this position.

Duties

Under the supervision of the Area Manager, this position provides professional level interpretive services for the San Juan Area and has responsibility for the management of the Moran Summit Center. This position leads the Interpretive Program for the San Juan Area and acts as a liaison with the Friends of Moran, Friends of Lime Kiln, and other partners. The purpose of this position is to research, develop, deliver, and maintain relevant interpretive opportunities that connect all Washingtonians to their diverse natural and cultural heritage and provides memorable recreational and educational experiences.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Moran Summit Visitor Center.
  • Work with local non-profits, friends groups, county, state, and federal partners to expand existing programs and leverage partnership opportunities to provide programming throughout the area.
  • Research, develop, educate, and implement interpretive programs, projects, and partnerships to ensure compatibility with the agency’s interpretive program.
  • Research, develop, and present thematic interpretive and educational programs such as guided tours, environmental education-based activates, youth-oriented Jr. Ranger Program, and programs with the focus on environmental education.
  • Responsible for development of virtual programming opportunities that extend outreach to underrepresented or underserved communities using pre-recorded or livestream multimedia methodologies.
  • Work with local school districts to provide programming both in person and on virtual platforms. 
  • Serve as a professional customer service provider.
  • Inform groups and individuals of park rules and regulations when necessary.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree involving major study in interpretation of Pacific Northwest history, American history, anthropology, geology, forestry, archaeology, ecology, or related fields AND Two (2) years of experience in natural history or historical interpretation gained through operation of an interpretive facility and/or curatorial experience.

OR

  • Master’s Degree AND one (1) year of experience in natural history or historical interpretation gained through operation of an interpretive facility and/or curatorial experience. 

OR

  • A combination of college education and experience in historic preservation or historic interpretation gained through operation of an interpretive facility and/or curatorial experience that equals four (4) years.

AND

  • A valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Parks Interpretive Assistant or equivalent.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Experience in public speaking and presenting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of interpretive methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of related American and Pacific Northwest history.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regional wildlife, ecosystems, and geology.
  • Ability to perform routine and minor maintenance of interpretive facilities, including trails, kiosks, and exhibits.
  • Ability to supervise volunteer staff.
  • Knowledge of state government, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of State Parks’ policies, rules, and regulations.

UNIFORM INFORMATION:
All Parks Interpretive Specialists are required to wear a uniform.  A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of an Interpretive Specialist and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee.  All Parks Interpretive Specialists will receive the same standard uniform that is issued to the Park Ranger series, to include: shirts, pants, shorts, headwear, sweater, belt, necktie, jacket and badge.
