Job Summary

Performs a variety of manual labor tasks in assistance to fully-trained personnel to repair, maintain, operate, and install basic city or park infrastructure systems and/or support events or activities. Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes, and/or operations and will be performed cooperatively with other employees and completed in a manner that assures individual, coworker, and public safety in all weather and working conditions.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Maintenance aide I is primarily an entry/training level position and requires minimal, if any, prior experience. Once an employee at this level is able to independently perform all the tasks and duties associated with his/her assignment and has obtained any necessary certification, it is possible for the incumbent to be eligible for movement to maintenance aide II depending on the complexity of the assignment, nature of the work, and how much prior experience the incumbent has with the city in the same assignment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Custodial Maintenance: Performs general maintenance and clean up of physical facilities to include cleaning and sanitizing buildings by sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors; cleaning public restrooms; picking up trash and litter; and the performance of minor equipment and facility repairs.
  • Fleet Maintenance: Sweeps/mops and does general clean-up of shop areas. Cleans and inspects machines. Moves scrap metal to collection area, empties shop oil drain containers, and crushes oil filters. Fills fuel cells and checks operation. Cleans and fuels vehicles as directed. Delivers/picks up vehicles at various locations. Assists technicians and parts department as needed. Files work orders and other materials. Assists in office as needed.
  • Parks – Grounds, Structural, and Natural Resource Maintenance: Mows; cuts brush; picks up leaves, repairs drainage systems; lays pipe and concrete; pressure washes surfaces; repairs benches and tables; paints; repairs signs; restores playground (wood chips) fall surfaces; performs grading and other landscaping duties; performs ballfield maintenance operations including lining, dragging, and grading of fields; performs golf course maintenance including work on tees, green fairways, and bunkers; irrigation repairs and course set-up; clears storm damage; prunes trees; installs new landscapes; builds and constructs all trail components; implements wetland, forestry, wildlife, and stream enhancement projects. Prepares surfaces for seeding and vegetation.
  • Storm and Surface Water Maintenance: Inspects, repairs, constructs, and cleans storm drains and catch basins. Vegetation removal and brushing. Inspects, cleans, repairs, and aids in installing storm drainage systems. Removes debris from and adds insulation to storm drainage systems. Reconstructs stream corridors. Inspects and maintains stream gauging equipment. Cleans vehicles, flagging, digs around utility sites, and drives light duty vehicles.
  • Street Maintenance: Maintains, constructs, and repairs concrete and asphalt sidewalks, patches roadways, repairs asphalt surfaces, sweeps street, installs street signs, installs lane buttons, and other pavement markings, and clears brush and weeds from city right-of-ways by cutting, edging, mowing, and spraying. Flags and cleans worksites and vehicles and drives light duty vehicles.
  • Wastewater Maintenance: Assists with sewer line repairs, inspections, and maintenance; digs around underground utility pipes; makes manhole adjustments; conducts high velocity cleaning of system components; completes manhole surveys; operates jackhammers and other power equipment; traffic flagging; cleans up worksites; and drives light utility vehicles.
  • Water Maintenance: Locates, installs, maintains, and assists with repairing water mains, water services, fire hydrants, pumps, blow off assemblies, air and vacuum release valves, and meters and meter boxes. Digs around underground utility pipes, operates jackhammers and other power equipment. Cleans worksites and vehicles. Flags and drives light duty vehicles. Under minimal supervision, paints fire hydrants and exercises valves; documents results of hydrant and valve survey.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

  • Works under the close supervision of a lead worker, crew leader, or other supervisory personnel. Once proficiency is demonstrated, individuals in this classification may be assigned to work alone or with minimal supervision during the course of a work day.
  • Employees receive direct supervision while on the job site in most cases, but the amount of direct supervision required may diminish as proficiency in task performance and equipment operation increases. May work independently on the basis of clear instructions. Work is to be completed with appropriate efficiency and in a manner that commands the respect of or demonstrates appropriate courtesy to coworkers and the public.
  • Custodial Maintenance: Frequently under direct supervision (but may occasionally work alone).
  • Fleet Maintenance: Works under direct supervision.
  • Parks – Grounds, Structural, and Natural Resource Maintenance: Works under direct supervision as appropriate.
  • Storm and Surface Water Maintenance: Works under direct supervision as appropriate.
  • Street Maintenance: Works under direct supervision as appropriate.
  • Wastewater Maintenance: Works under direct supervision as appropriate.
  • Water Maintenance: Works under direct supervision.
Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with hand-held power tools and related maintenance equipment.
  • Basic mechanical skills and manual dexterity.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance processes, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to learn to operate safely the equipment and machinery necessary to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to listen and understand direction/instruction, communicate with team members, and respond to customers tactfully and courteously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to being hired.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or a GED equivalent, preferred with 2-4 months of related construction or maintenance labor experience.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Exposure/experience adhering to safety rules and procedures is desirable.
  • Depending on assignment, may be required to possess a valid Washington driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record according to city standards. (Proof is required at the time of interview.)

  • Employees must provide and wear work clothing appropriate to their duties. Some tasks require a long-sleeved shirt.

Definition of a Seasonal Employee:  
•Must be pre-approved by Human Resources to ensure compliance with the legislation.
•Regularly scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week for which the customary annual employment is six months or less.
•”Customary” means that the nature of the position typically lasts for six months or fewer and that the period of employment begins at approximately the same time each year.
