This position will be based at Goose Lake State Recreation Area but will also cover Booth State Scenic Corridor and Chandler Wayside.

What you will do:

As a Park Ranger 2, you will be responsible for independently planning and carrying out personally, or by conducting teams of permanent/seasonal staff or Park Hosts, complex park maintenance and operation tasks to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs.

Utility system maintenance and construction

  • Maintain water distribution and treatment, and wastewater collection systems in good operating order: inspect, clean, lubricate and perform periodic tasks as required on lines, valves and equipment
  • Winterize park buildings and water lines

Park Operations

  • Give direction to individuals and teams including seasonal state park employees, volunteers etc., in completing resource and facility maintenance tasks
  • Independently plan and complete complex park maintenance, operation, facility and resource conservation and/or interpretation tasks
  • Analyze disruptions in park operations; prescribe and carry out appropriate solutions
  • Maintain work site in clean, safe condition; clean and properly store equipment; perform minor repairs

Landscape and Custodial Maintenance

  • Planting vegetation; mowing lawns and irrigating plants and lawns; Maintain irrigation systems and equipment
  • Prune trees and shrubs using manual and power tools, as well as apply fertilizers and pesticides
  • Clean park facilities including restrooms, showers, maintenance shops, and interpretive centers etc.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked in restrooms, collect garbage and recycling, clean fireplaces etc.

Visitor Services & Park Safety and Rule Enforcement

  • Use online reservation system to register and process campsite reservations; accept and process payments for park services
  • Provide information about local attractions and Oregon Parks, park rules and regulations to visitors
  • Seek voluntary visitor compliance with park area rules and regulations; issue verbal and written warnings as necessary
  • Conduct the operation of the campground and registration booth; train and oversee the work of seasonal employees
  • Inspect park grounds, buildings, facilities and equipment for safety hazards and possible violations, and take appropriate action
  • Maintain vehicles, work sites, buildings, maintenance shops, yards and storage areas in clean, safe condition

Building & Facility Maintenance and Construction

  • Maintain, and repair building plumbing systems using knowledge of basic plumbing skills (for example, unclogging toilets/drains; repairing sinks/faucets, repairing pipes and fittings; connecting pipes)
  • Maintain, repair and construct buildings and structural elements requiring basic carpentry skills (e.g.  walls, floors, ceilings, roofs) using hand and power tools; paint buildings and structures
  • Maintain and repair electrical systems requiring basic electrical skills (e.g. reset circuit breakers, replacing fuses etc.)
  • Construct, maintain, repair and restore park facilities using hand and power construction tools (ex. Trails, foot bridges, parking areas, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Four (4) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR

(b) A Bachelor’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies; AND One (1) year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR

(c) An Associate’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies AND 2.5 years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):

  • Experience conducting facility operations and maintenance by determining methods, means, and personnel (e.g. self, seasonal, volunteer, inmate crew) to accomplish the task.

  • Experience evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, as well as determining and carrying out the appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.

  • Ability to safely use tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.

  • Experience in plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds-keeping at a journeyman level.

  • Ability to diagnose maintenance and operational problems.

  • Ability to keep self and others motivated, be teamwork oriented maintain a Positive attitude, and show common courtesy while communicating with others.

  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
