Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert and be responsible for the overall program direction and management for Wilderness, Wilderness Study Area, Wild and Scenic Rivers and Lands with Wilderness Characteristics.
  • Using your knowledge of special area management, you are responsible for planning and program guidance. You will serve as a leader for temporary employees, youth crews and volunteers.
  • Communication skills are very important as you will be interacting with many user groups with sometimes conflicting points of view. Much of the work done in the Steens Mountain Wilderness is controversial and contentious.
  • You will be deeply involved with the Steens Mountain Advisory Council and must keep the group up-to-date on current happenings within the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area.
  • You will make recommendation to the Field Manager on how to implement and carry out the multiple use mission.
  • You will represent the Field Manager when working with internal and external organizations and represent the Bureau at conferences, seminars and other events.
