The Organizing Manager plays a pivotal role in the development and continued success of Everytown for Gun Safety. Each Organizing Manager oversees several state-level volunteer chapters including Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, and Everytown Survivor Network volunteers, focusing on training chapter leaders and the leadership teams to meet the organization’s goals in each state and to build an inclusive, and equitable chapter that represents the diversity of the state. Organizing Managers work with chapter leadership to develop strategic growth plans and grassroots organizing campaigns for each state. They assess needs, collaboratively set priorities, identify resources, and aid the chapters in their communications, partnerships, educational and advocacy efforts. Organizing Managers conduct site visits to their states, hold regular meetings with leaders, and run campaigns alongside members of other Everytown teams.

Organizing Managers receive training and resources upon starting, including background on the gun violence prevention movement, Everytown’s policy positions, managing for equity and inclusion, and volunteer management training.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop volunteer leaders:

• Mentor, train and manage volunteer leaders so that they can best support and grow chapter membership; regularly assess development needs of volunteer leadership.
• Build diverse teams and using management skills for equity and inclusion and equip volunteer leaders with the same skill set and knowledge
• Value different perspectives and proactively engage people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences in order to build a strong movement, while teaching volunteers to do the same
• Lead by example through demonstrations of integrity and professionalism
• Share direct feedback with others and listen to and implement feedback given

Chapter growth and building power:

• Ensure volunteer chapters are building sustainable grassroots field power for the organization to prevent gun violence
• Collaboratively create and oversee implementation of growth plans for chapters in the region, including developing the chapter in both breadth and depth of knowledge
• Utilize data about gun violence and a chapter’s growth and volunteer retention to direct the chapter’s focus and energy

Organizing strategy and campaign development:

• Work closely with the National Organizing Director and Deputy National Organizing Directors to develop national and local strategies for various campaigns and programs
• Collaboratively set long and short-term priorities with chapters; ensure work on the ground stays focused on agreed upon priorities, while maintaining flexibility needed to rapidly respond to new opportunities and challenges
• Seed, encourage and support tactical innovations from volunteers and help replicate those successes elsewhere
• Ensure campaign plans are in touch with realities on the ground; act as a bridge between volunteers and other stakeholders to make sure the organization’s plans are realistic and set up to succeed, advocating for volunteer needs to the larger organization.

Represent Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action and Everytown

• Act as a liaison between volunteer leaders and the rest of the organization; continually build confidence and excitement about our work, priorities and organizational choices
• Maintain regular communication with Chapter Leadership, serve as first point of contact for questions or needs, and connect them to staff contacts as appropriate
• Serve as public spokesperson when appropriate

Other duties

• Develop knowledge on gun violence prevention policy, local and regional politics and relevant policy issues within the region
• Monitor social media and other public platforms for appropriate content and ensure Chapter Leadership adhere to Social Media Code of Conduct
• Manage regional budgets and approve budget requests from chapters
• Serve as a liaison between the Organizing Team and other departments
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Understand how stereotypes, bias, and forms of racism in America (including structural racism, implicit bias, gender bias, religious bias, ageism, and bias based on gender identity or sexual orientation) impact our society, with an expectation that you will develop an ability to articulate the connection between these large societal issues and the disproportionate impact of gun violence on specific demographic groups in America
• Understand how dynamics of power, voice, and privilege impact one-on-one and group interactions, and a commitment to using power, voice, and privilege to make our movement more equitable
• Passion for the organization’s mission
• Strong volunteer or staff management skills, in particular experience working with diverse or marginalized communities, constituents, and volunteer leaders
• Passion for and demonstrated experience developing and mentoring volunteers or staff
• Organizing or campaign experience (issue or electoral)
• Experience writing and leading trainings
• Ability to understand, evaluate, and articulate policy and strategic planning issues
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to work with deadlines, under pressure, and be flexible
• Ability to travel within the U.S.
• Self-motivated and proactive problem solver
• Comfort with social media, data management and technology such as VAN
• Fluency in Spanish a plus but not required
