What you will be doing:
Under guidance and direction of the Parks Supervisor, performs general work to manage and maintain the health, structure, and appearance of open space and trails on Town-maintained lands. This includes vegetation management and grounds maintenance of open space, natural areas, greenways, and other Town-owned lands with natural resource values. Technician II/III requirements include: advanced proficiency in all assigned areas, ability to work at a high level with minimal supervision, and must possess additional education and certification in addition to experience. All staff are expected to adhere to the Town’s mission, vision, and values of PRIDE.

ANTICIPATED WORK SCHEDULE:
Full-time (Monday-Friday shifts) 40 hours per week with some nights and weekends as needed. Schedule may vary depending on specific needs.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: 
This role will supervise seasonal employees, volunteers, and youth corps.

Pay Ranges for Open Space & Trails Technician:

Open Space & Trails Technician I – $19.97/hr. – $26.16/hr.

Open Space & Trails Technician II – $23.08/hr. – $30.24/hr.

Operational duties

  • Assist, perform and direct a variety of routine to complex maintenance and construction activities to include open space, trails, and hardscape maintenance, assignments
  • Perform a variety of heavy laboring activities including the use of hand tools, a wide variety of power equipment and heavy construction and maintenance equipment
  • Operate tractor, mower, seed drill, water trailer, weed whip, chainsaw, dump truck, backhoe, loader, trailers, ATV, UTV, skid steer, chipper, chemical sprayers, and various hand and power tools
  • Perform open space vegetation management operations including mowing, trimming, seeding, cultivating, planting, pruning, removing, inspecting and weed control
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines; maintains usage records
  • Perform and assists with the design, building, installation, and maintenance of fences, benches, kiosks, pavilions, trash receptacles, signs, parking areas, and trailheads
  • Inspect and maintain irrigation systems; program controllers, design systems/layouts, and fix breaks
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to singletrack trails, disc golf course, and dog park.
  • Perform snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment or heavy equipment as assigned
  • Perform vandalism and graffiti removal
  • Performs trash and debris collection
  • Perform cemetery maintenance work including locating and excavating gravesites, filling gravesites after burials and recording of all cemetery activities
  • May perform athletic field preparation operations.
  • Maintain a safe working environment to include safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment; working in traffic and congested areas, working in ditches and confined spaces and all work environments

Administrative Duties

  • May help to plan, design, and implement site-specific maintenance, public improvement, and habitat enhancement projects
  • Perform data entry and prepares necessary records and reports including maintenance logs, work orders, safety inspections and ADA compliance records
  • Respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely manner
  • Prepare necessary records and reports

Supervision Duties

  • Supervise seasonal employees, volunteers, and youth corps in the performance of maintenance tasks
  • Provide instructions to volunteers as needed
  • Create and promote positive working relationships and an inclusive environment amongst staff, volunteers and participants. Facilitate conflict resolution strategies as needed

Town Wide Expectations/Duties

  • Serve as a professional ambassador of the Town by maintaining a professional image, a team-based collaborative approach and high ethical standards 
  • Interpret, communicate and enforce all Department, Town, County, State and Federal policies and procedures within areas of program responsibility 
  • Complete all required safety trainings in a timely manner
  • Develop and accomplish goals and objectives to support the Department and Town mission 

Other/Miscellaneous

  • May assist with related special events to include ordering materials and setting up equipment
  • Assist in the cleaning and organization of shop area
  • Respond to emergency situations, administer first aid, CPR and other medical attention as needed
  • Communicate the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values to staff, volunteers and key stakeholders
  • Serve on Department or Town committees
  • Perform related work as required and assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Technician I: A High School diploma or general education degree (GED). One year of open space and trails/natural resource management, landscaping, horticultural, arboricultural, turf management, laboring, equipment operations or other construction experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Technician II: A High School diploma or general education degree (GED). Three years of open space and trails/natural resource management experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
 
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to obtain CPR, ED and First Aid within three months of hire
  • Technician I/II: Pesticide Applicators License. Minimum of one industry recognized certification relevant to assigned area: Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC), International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), United States Forest Service (USFS), Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), Colorado Dept. of Agriculture (CDA), or similar organization

Knowledge of: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess a working knowledge of open space, trails, and natural resource management practices. Must possess knowledge of plant life, growing habits, and identification. The ability to use or learn to use hand tools and light to heavy equipment to include but not limited to a backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, snow plow, trailers, loaders, small to large walk behind and riding mowers, sprayers, compressors, and tractors with implements.
 
Skills in: Initiative and decision-making; verbal and written communication; identifying and defining problems, outstanding customer service to a diverse population; administrative functions; use and operation of parks, open space, horticulture and landscape equipment and materials; time management, meeting deadlines, responding to internal and external requests in a timely manner; the use of standard office equipment, computers, and various software programs; positive and professional working relationships with all Town staff and the community; conflict resolution; handling controversial issues; comprehending instruction, correspondence, and policies and procedures; problem solving; remaining composed in emergency situations and working effectively under stressful circumstances.
 
Environmental Factors:
Work is performed primarily in the field with minimal time in a standard office environment. Frequent to constant use of horticulture and landscape equipment and materials. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines.
 
Physical Factors:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and frequently lift equipment and materials of 20lbs or more.
