Mosaic Ecology is a vegetation management contracting and consulting firm with offices in Portland and Cornelius OR. We are looking to form working relationships with experts in the botanical sciences to contribute to various vegetation survey and monitoring projects. Applicants should have advanced plant identification skills, experience with several monitoring methods, ability to self-manage, and be able to lead a small team. The applicant will also assist in training current Mosaic employees and implementing methodology for vegetation monitoring. Work is not guaranteed and is dependent on pending proposals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree or higher in Botany, Plant Ecology, Plant Physiology, Environmental Science, Biology, or similar field;
- At least five years experience as a botanist or botanical technician;
- Demonstrated plant identification skills with PNW flora;
- Advanced knowledge of Oregon and Washington plant communities and habitat types;
- Ability to use a dichotomous key;
- Able to safely navigate remote areas using maps and GPS;
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct vegetation monitoring by applying a variety of methodologies;
- Identify plants to terminal taxa with use of dichotomous keys;
- Collect reliable and accurate field data;
- Assist in the organization and creation of internal herbaria;
- Use tablets, GPS units, topographic maps, aerial photographs, to navigate and determine plot locations;
- Use a variety of field programs to collect geospatial data;
- Conduct surveys by foot, vehicle, or boat;
- Work long hours in adverse weather conditions;
- Hike up to ten miles per day;
- Develop and improve internal monitoring protocols;
- Lead a technician or small team;
- Contribute to a positive and safe working environment;
- Communicate daily with Mosaic Operations Manager when working independently.
Skills Requirements
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds;
- Excellent organizational and data management skills;
- Excellent plant identification skills;
- Extensive knowledge of native and non-native plant species;
- Ability to utilize ArcCollector, Fulcrum, Google Suite, mobile tablets, various GPS receivers, and other forms of software/hardware for data collection in the field;
- Ability to efficiently utilize office time and work independently in the field;
- Excellent spatial awareness and ability to interpret maps while off trail and out of cell service;
- Good driving record.
Schedule and Benefits:
- Scheduling and hours to be determined based on awarded contracts.
- This is a temporary, on-call position: April to September
- Wage: $31-34/hr dependent on experience
