Our Ocean Fisheries Port Samplers,  

Conduct port sampling of recreational and commercial fisheries: 

• Provide feedback and make judgments daily regarding sampling protocols and field procedures – directly affects the statistical validity of data used by ocean fishery managers. 
• Assist fishery managers in regulating the exploitation of ocean fish populations while promoting the conservation of fish populations through sustainable harvest of fish stocks – directly affect the economies, livelihoods, and unique culture of Washington’s coastal communities. 
• Record, summarize, and chart field data utilizing electronic devices and software programs – requires daily synchronization of data collected into external databases and an emphasis on promptness and error-free records. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Position is 100% field work – working near sharp sampling tools, fishing gear and various equipment/machinery in fish houses or cannery rooms, negotiating steep ramps, slippery surfaces, unstable docks, boarding vessels, and lifting, handling, and manipulating fish daily/frequently, and rarely lifting fish weighing up to 60 lbs. 
  • Field work includes working in all the various coastal temperatures and inclement weather conditions – must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
  • Some computer work to be expected. 
• Schedule:
  • Monday – Sunday, non-scheduled, 24/7. 
  • Weekend work, non-consecutive days off, and occasional long hours are required.  
• Travel Requirements:
  • Daily travel is required within assigned ports.
  • Occasionally travel is needed to Montesano or other ports within Washington.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Knives, scissors, tweezers, hemostats, measuring board, Personal Flotation Devices (PFD), iPad, laptop, and Coded Wire Tag wands (CWT-wands).
• Customer Interactions:
  • Communicates with the public and recreational/commercial marine fisheries participants regarding current federal and state fishing regulations, regulatory actions, and other questions as requested.

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

License/Certifications:
