Wildlife Program
 
Ephrata, Washington – Grant County 

Season Length: 6 months
 April 1 – September 30 

Be a vital team member in the Northern Leopard Frog Recovery Project and support conservation of an endangered species. 

Envision yourself actively contributing to reintroduction initiatives, habitat management, and comprehensive surveys for the Northern Leopard Frog population at all life stages.

Picture yourself in the field, 

Performing visual encounter surveys for Northern Leopard Frog on reintroduction sites and native sites.

This is an opportunity,

To collect biological samples for ongoing research in genetics, disease, and monitoring.

With your amphibian knowledge and experience, 

Safely handle amphibians while taking measurements and recording data.

We are seeking candidates,

Duties

Some of what our Northern Leopard Frog Technician will enjoy doing, 

Conduct Northern Leopard Frog field work: 

  • Perform Northern Leopard Frog call surveys.
  • Assist with Northern Leopard Frog egg mass surveys and collection.
  • Assist with Northern Leopard Frog transport at all life stages. 
  • Monitor Northern Leopard Frogs in all life stages that are held in enclosures.
  • Conduct wetland habitat assessment surveys.
  • Provide direction to volunteers during field surveys.
  • Conduct funnel trap surveys to inventory species in wetlands.
  • Assist with bullfrog removal/euthanasia.
  • Use radiotelemetry and other equipment to track amphibians, often in wet, hot, and buggy conditions.

 

Data management: 

  • Organize, enter, and edit field data in spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
  • Enter and manipulate spatial data with use of GPS units and GIS software (ArcGIS, ArcOnline, Survey123 mobile app).

 

Infrastructure and equipment maintenance:

  • Construction or repair of pre-release and in situ enclosures with the use of hand tools.
  • Minor equipment repairs and maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • The majority of the work will occur outdoors (80%) and during inclement weather conditions (below freezing in the winter – 90+ degrees during the summer).  
    • Fieldwork includes frequent heavy lifting of field equipment such as coolers, t-posts/fencing materials, and enclosure materials (up to 40lbs). Walk up to six (6) miles a day in rough terrain. 
    • Will bend, stoop, and work while wearing waders and other wetland field gear, and be in areas with large populations of biting insects. 
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. Position has an irregular work schedule which will include early mornings, night shifts, and occasionally weekends.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Infrequent, but may be needed to assist with Northern Leopard Frog transfer. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand tools, 4×4 pickup trucks, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operation.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Regularly interact with project partners, volunteers, students, and occasional field encounters with the public.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two (2) years of experience in a wildlife related field.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Please Note: 

  • Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience.
  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or biology.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

  • Independently utilize GIS software (working knowledge level).
  • Strong interest in herpetology and herpetological field techniques.
  • Interest and desire to conserve endangered and/or rare non-game species. 

Experience: 

  • Six (6) months or more of wildlife survey experience, data collection, and GPS use.
  • Six (6) months or more experience in capturing and handling wildlife and biological sample collection.
  • Handling amphibians and/or other herpetofauna. 
  • As a crew or team leader and being comfortable in large groups.
  • Using all-terrain vehicles (ATV).
