Salary- $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly

Our Scientific Technician 2, 

  • Performs wetland habitat assessment surveys.
  • Collects biological samples for ongoing research (genetics, disease monitoring).
  • Performs funnel trap surveys to inventory species in wetlands.
  • Uses radio-telemetry to track amphibians, often in wet, winter conditions.
  • Provides direction to volunteers during field surveys.
  • Organizes, enters, and edits field data in spreadsheets (Excel).
  • Enters and manipulates spatial data with use of GPS units and GIS software (ArcGIS, ArcOnline, Survey123 mobile app).
  • Summarizes data and performs literature review/research.
  • Maintains records of volunteer efforts and daily activity logs.
  • Constructs/repairs pre-release enclosures with use of hand tools.
  • Performs minor equipment repairs and maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Mostly outdoor field work – approximately 60 percent of the time, with temperature/weather extremes.
    2. Fieldwork includes occasional heavy lifting of gear such as funnel traps, fencing, and large nets (up to 40 lbs.), walking up to 6 miles a day in rough terrain and bending/stooping.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
    2. Regular early morning hours during spring/summer and occasional weekends.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. No travel requirements.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Hand tools, 4×4 pickup trucks, and ATV operation.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Regularly interact with project partners, volunteers, students, and occasional field encounters.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

         OR 

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience in a wildlife related field.
    1. *This experience must include at least 6 months of:
      • Wildlife surveying.
      • Data collection.
      • GPS use.
      • Capturing and handling wildlife.
      • Biological sample collection.

Please note: 

  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or a closely allied field may substitute, year for year, for the required experience.
  • *Time can run concurrently for the required wildlife related field experience.

AND 

  • Independently utilize GIS software (working knowledge level).

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

Experience: 

  • As crew or team leader, comfortable in large groups.
  • With ATV’s.
  • Handling amphibians.
