Anticipated Appointment Length: 4 Months

Picture yourself performing land management and recreational site management activities/maintenance on the Chief Joseph Wildlife Area.

Strong candidates will have applied experience in habitat management, forestry, farming, weed control and equipment maintenance work.

Our ideal candidates will have a strong work ethic, the ability to follow written and verbal directions and can work independently in remote locations.

Duties

Our Fence Crew 

  • Performs technical duties to protect, maintain, and improve habitats, species, or recreational opportunities on the Wildlife Area.
  • Maintains facilities, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Constructs and maintains boundary stock fences on wildlife area lands to prevent livestock intrusion to agency lands.
  • Constructs and maintains interior stock fences for livestock management.
  • Uses ATVs, off-road vehicles, and hiking into extremely rugged terrain to construct and maintain fences
  • Writes activity reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Extremely rugged terrain, extreme heat and cold weather, rattlesnakes and fire hazards during fire season.
    2. Must be willing to hike in rugged terrain while carrying 50 lb. loads and lifting 80 lbs.
  • Schedule:
    1. Monday – Thursday – 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Up to 140 miles per day from Clarkston to wildlife area work sites.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Hand pliers, 240 hp 4X4 tractors, chainsaws, rock drills, trimmers, welders, ATVs, bulldozers, mini-excavators, forklifts, heavy farm implements, irrigation equipment, 4X4 trucks, winches, etc.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED

AND 

Experience with: 

  • Constructing and maintaining barbed-wire stock fencing.
  • Safely operating gas-powered equipment such as chain saws, brush cutters, and rock drills.
  • Safely operating and maintaining four-wheel drive vehicles in extreme conditions such as mud, snow, and steep slopes.

Certifications/Licenses:  

  • ATV Safety Training Certification, training is provided and must be completed within 2 weeks of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • First Aid Training.
  • Experience working on a farm or ranch, or a similar setting.
