The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has a full-time opportunity available for a Natural Resource Specialist (Natural Resource Specialist 1) in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Laboratory and Environmental Assessment Division’s (LEAD) mission is to provide timely, high quality data and information through monitoring, laboratory services, and data analysis. The Division serves the Agency programs and regional offices throughout Oregon and provides the scientific information necessary for the agency to achieve its mission to be an active leader to restore, enhance, and maintain the quality of Oregon’s air, water, and land. What you will do!

You will collect field chemical, biological, and habitat data for the assessment of water quality and watershed health throughout the state of Oregon. You will help with equipment maintenance, calibration, and purchasing. In addition, you will assist with maintaining the data, improving electronic data entry systems, and performing data retrieval as needed.

What are we looking for?

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resources, or a closely related field, OR 3 years of experience in an environmental science or natural resources field.

Candidates who are most competitive will also reflect the following:

  • Knowledge of proper monitoring and sample handling procedures.
  • Experience with water quality field equipment and meters, including pH meters, D.O. meters, automatic water samplers, multi-channel data loggers, multi-parameter datasondes, conductivity meters, and/or turbidity meters.
  • Experience collecting and preserving surface water, ground water, sediment, and biological samples.
  • Experience measuring environmental conditions using various monitoring techniques, procedures, and protocols.
  • Experience preparing sampling analysis plans or quality assurance plans.
  • Experience operating large vehicles, motored boats, and rafts, and experience pulling or towing a trailer or boat on roadways.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, observation skills, and evaluative skills.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed predominantly in the field with a wide variety of conditions. Physical outdoor activity may include adverse weather conditions; exposure to pollutants and chemicals; exposure to contaminated soil and water; exposure to fumes; exposure to airborne contaminants; fall or tripping hazards; climbing, kneeling, and crouching; substantial walking; and strenuous hikes carrying loads and equipment of up to 35lbs. Valid driver’s license required; this position requires the ability to drive large vehicles long distances, sometimes pulling trailers and/or boats.
