This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife located in Clackamas, Oregon.

What you will do:

Coordinate and implement various fish and wildlife habitat programs in the watershed within which it is stationed.  Program work involves being the primary point of contact for the ODFW Watershed District on habitat protection activities such as land and water permit review, in order to avoid, minimize, and mitigate impacts to fish and wildlife habitat. Program work is guided by the Oregon Conservation Strategy, individual species management or recovery plans, regulatory requirements, and the Climate and Ocean Change Policy. The position works closely with ODFW Habitat Division staff, ODFW District fish and wildlife biologists, numerous federal and state agency personnel, private landowners, as well as the private sector to accomplish the habitat protection and restoration goals necessary to achieve the agency’s mission. Writing, public speaking, collaborative group participation, and outreach/education are essential communication functions in this position.

 

Working Conditions

  • General office administration, development, oversight, and coordination of field projects.

  • Frequent highway travel and off-highway travel throughout the Region in all weather and road conditions. 

  • Frequent public contact affecting Department programs. 

  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required. 

  • This position requires an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

  • This position requires a Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response training certification.

  • Occasional travel in a 4X4 vehicle on rough roads, as well as independent work outside in rugged terrain and inclement weather.

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. 

  • Dealings with public, local residents and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is required.

 

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND

• A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.


• A Master’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

• A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

 

Applicants who have obtained a Master’s degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience.

 

The Master’s degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.

 

Requested Skills:

  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife species life histories and habitat requirements and an ability to accurately predict the effects of land and water development actions on these species

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex science, policies, technical data and concepts orally and in writing

  • Ability to work cooperatively and negotiate effectively with others even in tense or controversial situations. A sense of diplomacy is very important

  • Familiarity with GIS

  • Knowledge of laws, policies and regulations protecting habitat

  • Knowledge of how landscape-scale watershed processes, including disturbance events, influence fish and wildlife habitats

  • Prior experience evaluating impacts of a project or activity on fish, wildlife, and habitat resources
