What you will do:

• Receive and code commercial nearshore fishing vessel logbooks from vessel skippers or other personnel. Contact nearshore and black/blue rockfish permit holders to obtain late logbooks and coach fishers in the correct way to fill out the logbook per regulations. Error check logbooks and data through analysis of the information. Investigate discrepancies by interviewing vessel and processor plant personnel as needed to ensure correct information is recorded in logbooks. Compile compliance reports and disseminate to fishers and Oregon State Police for possible enforcement action.

• Analyze data, write reports, provide analysis and conduct evaluations for direct application in commercial fishery management. Produce charts and graphs from data for reports and presentations. Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of marine finfish species data for use in fishery management. Prepare written reports, including but not limited to the Commercial Nearshore Logbook Report presented annually to the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission.

• Train, coordinate and oversee the work of Oregon’s albacore samplers. Sample Oregon’s commercial albacore fishery, collect fishing trip data, and examine and measure samples of vessels’ albacore catch. Enter and error check catch data and sample data for Oregon’s albacore sampling program. Prepare monthly albacore sampling reports and send to other agencies. Act as liaison between ODFW and National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for albacore fishery issues including sampling questions, problems, and requests. Answer albacore questions from industry, public, and media.

Occasional work on vessels at sea where difficult ocean conditions may occur. Office work involves entering data, analyzing data and writing daily reports.
