Job Description:

Would you like the opportunity to work with exciting employees at the Plant Conservation Program? If so the Plant Conservation Program is currently recruiting for a Natural Resource Specialist 1(Assistant field operations) position.

As the Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Assistant field operations), you will assist the Natural Resource Specialist 3 (Field Office Coordinator) with logistical and field support. Logistical support includes planning for a variety of field-based insect surveys and associated supplies needed such as, determining the number of insect lures, survey supplies, and vehicle needs for the season. In addition, you will be responsible for ordering lures and survey supplies, assisting with maintaining seasonal fleet vehicles and organizing and maintaining the warehouse in working order with supplies stocked. Field support includes placing insect traps, reviewing paper and electronic maps, and assisting field crews.

In addition, as the Natural Resource Specialist 1(Assistant field operations), you will participate in the insect laboratory, biological control, and eradication programs with field work, lab work, and care for insect and plant colonies. During eradication programs or when positive insects are detected, you may help out with educational outreach and out public town hall meetings.

Our Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Assistant field operations) is a permanent full-time position, is based out of the Salem field office, in Salem Oregon and is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

We, at Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), ensure healthy natural resources, environment, and economy for Oregonians now and in the future through inspection and certification, regulation, and promotion of agriculture and food.  As a member of the ODA team, you will be helping to protect Oregon’s agricultural industries and natural environment from harmful plant pests, diseases, and noxious weeds. This program is an important component in the agency mission to serve the changing needs of Oregon’s diverse agricultural and food sectors to maintain and enhance a healthy natural resource base and strong economy in rural and urban communities across the state.

Working conditions

This is what you need to qualify

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Biology, Entomology, Plant Pathology or a related Natural Resource field;

 OR

  • Three years of experience in a horticultural or a natural resource field
